            Hello Graham

Welcome to the forum, sadly your question is, at present unanswerable but to establish a basis for an answer we will first ask ……..What kind of wooden ship?

Speed boat, Galleon, Warship, Tug, Cabin Cruiser, Yacht, the choices are very wide as unfortunately are the choices of tools.

Ask any ten model builders and you will get ten different choices of tools but all ten would first ask what kind of model.

Real ships can be made from almost anything. Models of ships can equally be made of almost anything, whatever the real thing was made of. The two rarely coincide. All that is normally seen is the paint on the outside.

So, a model of a wooden ship, in wood? Or a kit comprisng wooden parts? A working model or something for display only?

I don't know of any kits that come with tools supplied. Its a matter of economics. Such a kit would cost more, and nobody with tools would want to pay the extra for spare tools.

But, for a good combination of ease of build, low initial outlay, and getting a nice working boat at the end, have a look at the Sea Scout from Slec.

Choosing a first model can be tricky, a model not too big, but attractive and simple to build has often been a good start. Does anything on this web page appeal?

                https://www.slecuk.com/boat-kits?page=2

I'm not sure that link has copied properly, if not Google slec uk and go to vintage model boat kits page 2

If you really want to start with a ship, have a look at the web page for Cornwall model boats, then go through the ship kits, just to narrow down what you're looking for. Don't buy anything until you've asked on here about suitability for a beginner, many are anything but that.

                  Hi Graham

If I were you I would start with a simple balsa model – either working or static. Initially, you need to build up skills…

You also need to build up a tool kit. This can be quite basic to begin with but normal 'household' tools eg screw drivers, pliers, Stanley knife, hand-drill etc will take you a long way. You will also need some glues and adhesives eg 2-pack epoxy, superglue, PVA (aliphatic if possible).

Find out first if the hobby is for you ! You will learn important lessons on your first boat. Then, if you want to continue, spend some money on specialist tools, go to a few model shows and, maybe join a club (highly recommended for the help you'll receive)…

                  Happy modelling,

                  Dave

Hi Graham. We need some input from you regarding your skill level and aspirations!

Check out “eezebilt “ boats. Very easy, nice models, and only needing a craft knife, sandpaper and paint.

                    Ashley

The phrase "wooden ship" to me suggests a static model, probably of a sailing vessel. Anyway, it looks like the gent has lost interest since his original post.

That seems to happen too often doesn't it Dave? Someone asks a question then disappears. Blooming rude in my opinion, not even a thanks for trying to help.

Of course there may be a good reason, illness etc, but not every time this happens surely.

Unfortunately you're right, although I have had two very nice private messages in the last couple of days, expressing thanks for my contributions to the forum. I find that the members of this forum are generally a lot more polite in that respect than on The Other Forum.

You're right there Dave. I've given advice, sometimes lengthy, on some threads which isn't acknowledged, just common courtesy, or the thread hasn't been replied to at all. Might be a genuine reason for the latter though. I sometimes wonder why I bother but when a new poster asks a question I invariably try and help as shouldn't tar them all with the same brush.

I think we should continue to encourage "newcomers" to modelling, otherwise, in this age of 'instant gratification' we are all doomed to modelling extinction.

I suppose, though, being realistic, some newcomers will "sink without trace". Also, I think it's a fine line between giving them helpful, comprehensive starting advice and frightening them off !!

                                You can't win them all…

                                  Hi All,

At the end of the day we all reply with the best of intentions for the single poster's, perhaps we could ask anybody joining the forum to introduce themselves before any of us post a reply to their questions??

Another lovely day for the workshop

                                  Regards Ray

Yes, I wouldn't think of going on a new forum and asking for advice or selling anything (!) without introducing myself and ideally some background information . Again just common courtesy.
