Hi everyone, well the Whitehall build is progressing slowly but surely am now at the stage where I am about to size and fit the rear decking, the instructions then say to add bits to the outside of the hull. Would this be a good time to paint the hull and forward decking. Only I can go and get the paint tomorrow, I hope it will look ok as I am going to brush paint it so will I need a primer onto the plastic. Regards Dai H

          Hello David

It depends on what the outside bits are?

You certainly can`t really glue onto a painted surface

It would be helpful, if you can post a few photographs?

I normally paint directly onto the plastic, without a primer, but you need to take the shine off, with a fine sanding first

Like Bob I paint direct on plastic with a bit of roughing up, but if spraying, I like to use a plastic primer spray first as it (may/probably) give better adhesion.

Hi to you Bob & Ashley, I have taken your comments on board and will let you know how I get on. As for photos well apart from not knowing how to do it (I have never had the need before!!) I will have to learn, but then I am saving you two from having nightmares as i am sure you would look at my efforts and scream out "oh no what is he doing it that way for".Your help and advice is always welcome. Regards Dai H

Dai. Most often there is no right or wrong way to do things. People often have a way they do stuff and that's what they want to do.

Painting is a minefield, but on plastic you are on fairly safe grounds as almost any paint is fair game (but be a bit careful on the cellulose) but saying that virtually all car spray paints are acrylic nowadays!

The quality of finish is what matters. It is quite easy to get a decent finish if you flat things off nicely and just take a bit of care.

Applying primer normally results in a layer of what is essentially plastic to paint on to. So painting actual plastic, at least, the sort found in models, primer is not really needed if the surface is clean, dry and lightly abraded. But it usually needs that treatment for the primer to stick.

However, an undercoat is usually a good idea to give an extra solid layer to prevent unwanted light shining through when the model is backlit. That, and painting the insides of the hull a light colour so that you can find the small parts you will drop inside at some later time. Sticking things to a painted surface usually involves removing some paint, else the parts are not stuck to the boat, just to the paint.
