Hello to everyone, I have just joined today as I am back to modelling after many years away (got married!!), and for my 68th b'day my family have bought me a U S S Whitehall patrol craft and I would like to know if it is suitable to do this after being away for so long. I have lots of time and patience as I am retired so there is no rush. Also on reading on an american site the use of green putty which I have never heard of so what is our name for it.

Any help and advice will be more than welcome.

      Regards Dai H

There is a "blog" on the other Forum here **LINK**

You won't get anywhere near Stan Reffin's quality because the guy is one the country's finest boat modellers, but it will give you a very good idea of what is involved. You'll have to join that forum in order to see the photos but it's not fatal or even mildly painful!

Dave Milburn, many thanks for your reply and I have looked at what Stan has to say and he really knows his stuff, he mentions clamps to hold it together after gluing have you any idea what they are like and can I buy them, if so how many will I need?. also he says the hull is 'thin' but I assume it will all work out o k if I am careful with it.

            Again many thanks

Hi Dai, from you nickname i take it you are in Wales, the clamps that Stan used are standard woodworking G clamps, cheep one from Pound stores, also the spring clamps, 8 x quid bought some on friday, glue's mentioned, superglue Pound shop, epoxy, same but they usualy only sell 5 minute so have a look in B&Q etc for the longer setting types. He did mention how thin the plastic of the hull was, epoxy generates heat as it cures so use with care.

Hope this helps, don't know how long you have been out of modeling, so some of the words might confuse. (ask) the only daft question is the one you didn't ask

              Regards

              Mark

Hi Mark, many thanks for your reply and advice. You are right I do live in Wales in an old colliery village called Oakdale, yes Wales the land of song rugby and rain. I will go up to the local town today and get the clamps you mentioned. How long have I been away well joined the army at 19 did 22yrs then got married (mad fool that I am) and am now 68 and retired so really a life time. Can you please advise me of the glue you would use, also may I add you as a friend on the site.

Hope you have a good day

                Regards

Dai. A quick look at the other forum leads me to believe the hull is vac formed, so styrene plastic. Plastic weld or similar will glue this and also be the first choice for any other styrene bits you are adding.

Superglue seems to stick to styrene very well so can be used to glue ply bits to this.

Green putty is the filler in a tube…Humbrol do one, there are several makes. The Humbrol one certainly smells of thinners so will effectively glue the plastic together, but will tend to melt it at the same time if used excessively.

P38 car filler is usually ok.

Epoxy works if the surface are roughened but in my experience will come away if the plastic is flexed too much

                  Ashley
