I am hoping to soon make a start on building a model of the steam trawler Ben Idris from John Pottinger plans. Still very much a beginner when it comes to working models so would appreciate some advice.

The model will have beam of about 6" (150mm) and length 32" (810mm) what size of motor and prop would be best to achieve something like scale speed.

I have the Billings 'Nordkap' model trawler of the same approx. dimensions, it sails very nicely with a 'Mabuchi 555' motor & a 40mm brass 3 bladed

This is not a fast model – quite the opposite – so the usual run of "stock 540" etc won't do the job. You need a small-ish motor with plenty of torque and a fine-pitch prop. I'd suggest an MFA 385LN motor **LINK** running on a 7.2v NiMH pack with a 3 or 4 blade 35mm scale prop. Others may have different ideas – there's no "best" set-up here; just the one that suits you the most.
