Seeking advice on making my recently purchased "Scottish Fishing Boat". It was scratched built and I want to convert it to radio control. I have a fair understanding of the necessary items as I fly model aircraft. But setting up the boat is a bit different !

The boat is L- 3ft x W-10" x H_12". It weighs 8.8lb. I need to know power of Motor and ESC; I will be using 2.4 ghx transmitter. How do you set it up ? I need to know about u/j in respect of the prop shaft from the rudder and size of rudder ! Any advice would be appreciated !! Eric.

Hi Eric and welcome to the forum. A few questions to see what we are about before getting to the specifics.

First things first, was it made to float? DOES it float? If it does float, you will be adding extra weight, will the boat be able to take this??  You will have to ballast it a bit in any case or it is likely to turn over (possibly)

Perhaps it has a propshaft and stuff in it already?

For an appreciation of what's involved I would have a SURF to see other builds, and/or buy a magazine with a Glynn Guest plan in it. These are always simple craft, and will show you the layout of motor/coupling/shaft and so on.

Rudder size is determined as much by the space available as much as anything. You will need access above the rudder to fit a tiller and rod to operate it.

Assume you have Li-po batteries?? A picture or three would be good. Create an album , put pictures in it, use these p[pictures to put in a post

          Ashley

A 385 motor intended for 15 volts running on about 6 or 7.2 or 7.4 volts controlled by an Mtronics Viper 15 is probably the answer. Prop shaft – M4, length to suit your layout. Coupler to suit motor shaft diameter at one end and prop shaft configuration at the other.

Whether you can actually install any of this depends on how the model was made, and whether it was ever intended as a working, floating model.

              Hello Eric

It is a lot easier to provide advice if we can see the subject in question so would it be possible for you to post some photos showing as many different views of your boat including front, rear, side, above, below and any internals.

              Paul

I`ll have to wait for my Grandson, as there should be 6 photos showing not just the one.

Eric. There is no actual right answer to outfitting your boat, as you are bound to get conflicting views on motor size and so on. It is not a science, more of an art, despite that some people do like to do calculations.

We will wait for the pictures. That shaft sticking out looks to be a 2mm job, which we would all agree is too small.

No one will deny a 4mm shaft would be the right size, it is the common diameter, and the red/black u/j type couplings are also widely used, although some prefer the rubber joined versions.

Just going on the size of it, my preference would be an MFA 540/1 low power motor on 7.2v, but brushless are popular..something giving perhaps 8000 rpm on your chosen battery voltage.

Thanks for the info from all of you ! Can you recommend a book, that will outline a power train set-up ? I have surfed through builds but to no avail to what I`m seeking. I imagine it will be a thin wooden base with the receiver , esc and motor attached to the base. And the prop shaft linking up to the motor.

Eric. I had written a lengthy thesis on the outfitting of a boat, but will wait for the pictures.

The ESC and receiver can go anywhere convenient for access, preferably not on the floor in case a drop of water gets in. Velcro sticky tabs are as good a way as any of securing the receiver. ESC could fit in a pocket somewhere…as it will be a low power one, it is not likely to get hot.

Picture of the installation in my MFA Seahawk. A sizeable hull, fibreglass so clear of frames and so on. ESC strapped to cross beam on left. receiver at bottom in plastic open box. Brushless motor, double  red plastic U/J coupling since replaced with an all steel version)

                          Thanks Ashley,

Do I take it the clear tubes are for water-cooling ? Pictures should be available by the week-end. Eric.

In this case yes. Both the motor and ESC are water-cooled. The battery gets very warm when running this setup. I am afraid to put a wattmeter on it…..

However, nothing has melted yet.. The motor used to be in my big KM Ecranoplan, running 9.6V. In the Seahawk I am using 7.2 and a slightly smaller prop, so things are not quite so scary.
