has anyone done a in depth thread on tools needed for this hobby ?

as i can see to be usefull is

razor saw , crft knife , set square , steel rule , cutting mat , mini clamps , rubber bands , ratchet type clamps , various crades of sand paper , razor plane , conumables like glues fillers , paints , sanding sealer .

Also i have found a 1950/60's 1/3 hp 1450 rpm motor which i will be making my own bench sander , a friend is turning me up a disc to mount onto the shaft to take 150mm discs where will be stuck using velcro to the face . will outlast many cheaper type these days .

and other bits added to the list would be helpfull ,

Matt, the 2015 Special Issue of Model Boats which I edited:

contained a comprehensive article on the tools needed for model boating and how to use them written by an experienced model boater. You can see the full list of contents here:

I find a Dremel-type tool invaluable for a host of different applications – trimming edges, cutting slots or holes…

I expect to find a CNC router and a 3-D printer invaluable as well – once the price comes down a bit.

And finally we must not forget the CAD package, which has pretty much taken over from the back of an envelope…

                Hello Matt

All that I have ever really needed for building wooden boats is a jigsaw and drill (£10 each from B&Qs cheap range) few cheap mini clamps, straight edge, Stanley knife, a sharp pencil, surform block plane, 400 & 800 grit glasspaper, 600 & 1200 grit wet&dry paper and waterproof pva.

For filler I use a paste of pva mixed with sawdust and paint is any cheap aerosols at Halfords or the £1 shop.

Occasionally I use twin pack epoxy glue (araldite) on critical joints.

                All in all about £45.

                Hope this helps

                Paul

btw before using the jigsaw I cover the cut line with masking tape and then cut through the wood and tape, this helps prevent the wood from splintering during the cut.

                  Matt

I have both a 12" bandsaw (E-Bay S/H £20) and a very old Dremel "Motoshop" jigsaw (circa 1990 – i.e. not the new type). Both do their respective jobs so I've no thoughts on buying anything "better". My advice would be to use what you have and discover what they can and can't do, then decide if you want to upgrade. Note that jigsaws and scroll saws are not designed to cut straight lines, whereas a bandsaw is just the job for them.
One of the most used and useful tools I have is a set of cork-borers. These are six tubes from 10mm down to 4mm which are sharpened at one end and have a Tee handle on the other. Their main use is in laboratories but I find them incredibly handy for balsa and ply. The holes they cut are far cleaner than any drill. See here (although mine came from an engineer's merchants) **LINK**

Thanks guys , most hand tools have already and a dewalt 18v cordless drill , Bosch 240v jigsaw the scroll saw is quite naff really , only payed £10 for it . As said my brother has a dewalt bandsaw which is great bit of kit if cutting out ply . Yes I can see where a dremel would be handy !

Do you guys use small palm sanders when hull has been filled and need to take majority back until can sand with a block ?

                      Matt

There are lots of different ways to remove the waste wood before fine sanding. I use a belt sander with 80 grit paper to knock off the bulk before changing to a palm sander with 120 grit and finally smoothing up with 400 grit.

I should add the caveat that the belt sander is very aggressive and will remove 20mm thickness in less than 30 seconds so it not for the faint hearted or for those working on smaller models.

I also use a surform block plane which is also very good at removing timber.

                      Paul
