Thinking about building a Perkasa. Whats the advantage of 37inch or 49inch model size.

I’ve made a few big heavy models in the last 50 years, but I don’t make them anymore.
Big models look and perform more realisticly on the water, but can hurt your back, and wallet.
Storage can be an issue too.
If you’re healthy and happy to pay a bit more go for a large model while you can, you’ll enjoy them.

I would go with Charles on that one, big is best. The four footer needn't be that heavy, and the 3 footer is still a decent size for this sort of vessel.

A moderately wise man once told me "If you have a choice, get the big 'un". Bigger boats do work better, but there are limits, like getting them in and out of the car and in and out of the water. Archimedes knew what he was talking about.

Decide which one you really want and then look for reasons why it's better than the other one. My wife has shopped like that for years…

                    Hello Stephen

As an advocate for large model I would go for the 4ft, it will look very impressive on the water.

the system obviously has its limitations even though I do agree that bigger is betterwink

                        Hello Stephen

I should have mentioned that my 4ft Huntsman was powered by a 2 stroke hedge cutter engine and it had an impressive turn of speed but sadly no reverse. I sailed it on my local canal where there is an endless supply of straight runs and wide places for high speed turns.

                          You are a brave man.

I wouldn't fancy my chances if I told my wife that bigger was better when going into a dress shop…

                            Hi guys

Thanks for the responses. I understand that big craft tend to look the part but I WAS THINKING ALONG THE LINES of the 37inch. My grandson is 4 and I'm not so young, plus carrying around etc. Plus I have an excuse for a second model, even bigger and more expensive.!! Grandchildren are great excuses for trains, boats and planes.

A second question is where do I buy(good price good service etc.).

Mrs M is actually a petite lady; she worries when she gets up to 9 stone… I'd be happy if I could get down to twice that! The process of 'post-purchase justification' should be familiar to any bloke who's ever bought a new car. Cold logic and/or statistics will nearly always tell you that you made a wrong choice, so just admit that you bought it because you fancied it. Works for me every time, plus it stops any debate with the pub or office know-it-all dead in its tracks!

Frankly it's a pretty poor kit in either size, but do avoid the wooden ones unless you're an experienced woodworker; that hull shape is a swine to get right in plywood. I was halfway through a total redesign for Balsacraft/Precedent when John Rudd, the boss, died in 1999. All work on it stopped and Anglia Model Centre subsequently bought the kit rights. If you want a three foot MTB then I'd suggest the Kawkab from Model Slipway. http://www.modelslipway.com/
