      Hi there,

Just picked up the above Model GRP Hull already built to a very high standard it was made for steam but the builder made it electric..its has the water tank built in forehead' what would be the ideal power plant for this model in electric ,prop size ,motor and battery,

I believe its an early kit with all the stock parts fitted well over a thousand for a kit? ! do I keep the stock prop and 540 motor thats fitted or go different i

      thanks

I wouldn't use a 540 unless it was geared down. My choice would be the low speed version of the 775 from Component Shop **LINK** A MFA 800 might also do the job well – both driving the prop direct (ungeared).
The prop supplied for a steam engine will likely be the right diameter but very coarse pitch; you could fit a finer pitch one.

As Dave says, steam plants tend to be high torque/low speed. Electric motors are more in the opposite direction so for the same diameter prop its best to either gear down or fit a finer pitch prop which will be better matched to the motor speed.

thanks for the link that motor looks ideal low current draw doesnt give the can size will that fit in a 540 mount I wonder

No. It's a bit bigger (hence it starting with a 7 and not a 5).

From the link I sent, click on the blue text "Learn More". If you then left-click your mouse over the small diagram on the right underneath the main photo a fully dimensioned drawing of the motor will appear. You can enlarge this if necessary. This motor is also available with a mounting bracket.

yep got it thanks….is it better to have a 4 bladed prop or a 3 bladed prop if i worked out the size and pitch so they both came out approx the same propulsion wise are they both as efficiencent or is a 4 blade more so or visa versa or just for asthetics

Aesthetics. No doubt some will would argue about this statement, but..

For the boat you are proposing to electrify, an X pitch two blade plastic prop would no doubt suffice quite well and be really cheap, but look rubbish.

Ashely cant do a plastic prop as you say it would look ……not good

At that speed it's not going to make a lot of difference either way, so I suggest you use the same number of blades as the prop which was originally supplied.

Graeme. I was simply saying that almost anything will do to propel this boat, you should decide what sort of prop to fit on aesthetics . The manufacturers website has loads of photos, one of which is of a 4 bladed prop fitted. No idea what size but unless it suggests a size then you can gauge it on the space provided to fit the prop.(viz. looking at the picture)
