I haven't built a model in 30+ years but, for some reason, I want to give it a go.

Quite specifically, I want to build a Motor Torpedo Boat. Not sure that I ever want it to be R/C as that's not an interest of mine but would be happy to keep that option open.

Ideally, I am looking for something to build in wood (balsa?) but with some really decent plans/instructions, something 2-3' in length.

So, my question, as a complete novice, is what do I aim for in terms of a kit or set of plans that would provide a reasonable challenge without me needing to fall back on 20 years experience (which I don't have).

I look forward to hearing back from you and thanks in advance.

How about this one? **LINK** Just about fits the bill perfectly.

Thanks Dave, that looks very promising to me.

Do you know what the plans actually cover, the base build or all the additional items such as torpedo tubes and the like?

Glynn's plans are pretty comprehensive; he's been doing it for a long time! If you can get a copy of the magazine back-issue then you'll see how detailed the building instructions are. The guy leaves little to chance or guesswork.

It's just occurred to me that my old marra John Elsy (aka Bluebird) did one of his superb build-logs of this plan on The Other Forum. At the risk of being shot at dawn by Admiral Sir Colin Bishop for treason here's the link http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,31199.0.html

And if you want to spend another £39 you can buy the wood pack for making all the major parts.

That's excellent Dave. A pity the images seem to have disappeared.

Thanks Colin, I saw that. Looks a sensible way for me to go.

Hi Jeremy you have to be a member of Mayhem to see the pics

Colin I think I built the full boat for less than £39 and that was with the motor /propshaft and coupling included

John, well of course you would – you are hardly beginner! Nice to hear from you again. Is Exeter finished yet?

Jeremy, if you like the model then it would be best to just get the plans initially and consider whether you are happy about building it. As a Glynn Guest design it will be very straightforward, especially if you get hold of a copy of the magazine in which the article originally appeared which explains the construction process. (June 2011) In fact if you can find a copy of this issue the free plan may still be in it so you won't have to purchase it separately!

                        Colin

                          hello there Colin,

Why aye the Exeter finished – but it hasn't had sea trials.

Ive been having a rest from my modelling – doing other things now I got another build on the go

                          MV TROYBURG

What surprises me for the price of £39 for the Balsa wood and plan – but do you get the article as well for that price? Cos don't forget one has to purchase hardware so you can stick another £30 on easily and if you haven't got the radio gear you can say there is another £40 so what starts off to be a cheap model – becomes very expensive. Good thing is tho – when you build from scratch you can budget weekly/monthly and only purchase the parts you need, when you need them.

                          aye

                          John

Thanks guys. I shall see if I can track down a copy of said article.

I'm not too fussed at the cost tbh. I think it unlikely that I'll put a motor in it as it is the building of it that interests me more than the running it.

Compared to my main hobby this looks decidedly attractive from a financial point of view.

                            Cheers

Jeremy. There is nothing better than spending all that time buildinga boat and seeing it on the water!

You must at least put in a `real` propshaft and allow space to make it run.

R/C gear is so cheap now.

Thanks Ashley. I'm not really fussed about taking it on the water, the interest for me lies in building it but if the plans allow space for RC kit then I won't be aiming to alter that.

                                Cheers

"..And if you want to spend another £39 you can buy the wood pack for making all the major parts…"

                                  Hmm.

The EeZeBilt site **LINK** provides free plans specifically designed for beginners. And the latest one is a 20" ELCO PT-Boat – plans here: **LINK**

Total wood cost – around £6. Total extra cost for the fittings you see, around £2 for the two cowl ventilators you see. All the rest is made up from household scraps (though I cheated a little and used about a foot of brass tube for the gun barrels and a bit of brass sheet… of course, the motor and radio is extra…

Here is a picture of two of them on the stocks waiting for a bit more paint and some numbers. Oh, and did I say that they are also designed to be built with minimal tools on a bit of wood in your bedroom…?
