Hello, I'm Planning to build a 1/96 Type 12 Rothesay class. I would appreciate any advise and specifically if the Sitek running set for the Leander would be suitable. Also, would 2 x 540 motors be sufficient? Many thanks in advance.

Hi James. I would have thought that the running gear would be suitable,, considering the hulls are much the same, however a few measurements might be in order just in case, regards shaft lengths and so on.

I would suggest a pair of 555 motors on 12v as being suitable, rather than 540`s. I have 555 motors turning 5 bladed 40mm props on my stretched 1/96 type 42 destroyer running off a 12v 7Ahr SLA battery no probs.

Many thanks Ashley for the advice. If you don't mind I may be picking your brains quite often! Another quick question, do you generally make your decks from wooden board or styrene? Thanks, James

Ah now theres a question. The above boat is a f/glass hull, and I would have used 1.5mm ply for it…although I actually did the work 25 years ago I cant remember what i did for stiffening. It is 57" long and there are no cracks or movement in it to be seen, so it has lasted well.

Mostly its 1.5mm ply, brace well underneath..I use balsa for this..light and quite stiff..keeps top weight down.

I think you will find that Styrene also has its adherants, and this will be personal choice. Ultimately either will do.

DM. Just between you and me, I didnt mention the H word as used on two boats wot i have made, as obviously no one is using this superior product. Ashley. hug

Finally making some progress, albeit slow! Drive lines in and bilge keels fitted. Now for I guess an obvious question, apologies in advance. HMSP is running off two props, I guess I need two ESC's? I have one, a Viper Marine 20. If I do need two, could you confirm how I connect both to the receiver (Planet T 5) to ensure I get both motors running in sinc?

                        Thanks,

                        Jim

Two ESCs. The greatest benefit of two ESCs is that you get to control the motors independently, much as the real thing. Juggling the sticks syncs them. That, or using a mixer in the boat or a mixing facility if the transmitter has it. They can be set up on a Y lead so that both plug into the same channel. Assuming that they can be set up (some autoset, some are as supplied), if they are set up matching, they will sync. More or less.

One ESC. As long as the one ESC can handle both motors under load, it will generally work fine as long as you are aware that the motors themselves, and the loads on them, will vary within some sort of tolerance. If using two motors off one ESC, it is a good idea to fit a fuse for each motor, if anything 'orrible happens to one motor, hopefully the fuse will protect the ESC and leave some power to get the boat back.

Thanks Malcolm, much appreciated. I'm using a Viper Marine 20 ESC, two 545 motors. Another obvious question, how would you connect the 2 motors to the one set of bullet connectors from the ESC. Finally, what power source would you recommend. Thanks again, Jim

instead of fuses you could fit a 10A self setting circuit breaker to each motor

Progress is sadly slow on my type 12 (m) but for my first ever build I'm reasonably happy with how it's going. I'm now looking at deck colours, specifically for type 12's around the time of the Falklands. Research tends to point towards "holly bush green" , BS 4800/5252. Could anyone possibly confirm if this is correct?

                                Many thanks

Hi James, I think your right about the deck colour, but from my recollection Holly bush green does come to mind from my time served onboard, ours was non slip so very good during roughers. Good luck with the build. Any Piccys available.

Thanks Andy, now to find a spray can that matches that! Couple of pictures, not great but show where I'm at! Mast work is not entirely accurate but I'm happy with it!

Bullet connectors, popular item in car accessory shops, as are the female connectors which come in various varieties, including multi-way.
