Hi,newbie to the site, nice to meet you all. Have joined to try to better myself in the understanding of model boats. I've recently purchased a 2.4 digital boat. Now this is where the problem starts. It tests fine on dry land. But when placedin water the range is only 100yrds . I was led to believe 2.4 digital would go out of sight well near as. So any idears what the problem could be. The boat stops. Then I can regain control to bring it back. The boat has a brush less water cooled motor. Runs on two 6v 10amp battery's. Any advice as to the problem would be great.

Ginger. When you say it stops, then you can regain control..is this by walking nearer the boat or just waiting a few mins??

The 2.4 sets do not have a particularly long range on water, and some sets are better than others.

It could also be due to the batteries getting low on power…a powerful motor will drop the voltage and the ESC may stop so cutting off power to the receiver assuming you are using the BEC facility.

Placing the receiver as high as possible in the boat will help somewhat. What sort of boat so you have??

            Ginger, welcome.

The DX4e is, as most Spektrum units, designed for flying. That said, I've just read its manual and the range test is the same as for most Spektrum units 28metres. It does mention later "do not fly above 400 feet" but I think that's more to do with planes becoming a hazard for other flyers.

I think that if you can still see your boat at 100 yards you are very lucky, and certainly flyers would not want their planes 100 yards away. At that distance I would find it extremely hard to tell which direction my boat was facing, and indeed, whether it was coming or going in relation to me. Also, how many waters are there with 100 yards of open water? I know we're lucky here, we have a 420 metre long lake just down the road.

I don't think there's a problem with a set on 4 x AA getting 100 yards, maybe your expectations are a wee bit too high. Is it really safe to try and control a boat "out of sight"?

The stopping and then re-starting sounds very much like signal loss due to being out of range.

            Kim.

Not all 2.4GHz outfits are created equal. Some are "park flyer" standard, which basically means that they are reliable line of sight short range devices combining low weight and cost.

Mounting the end inch of the RX aerial as high as possible will help maintain line of sight, hopefully there will be nothing in the build that either reflects or absorbs the radio wave. Some sets have two aerials which are recommended to be mounted at 90 degrees from each other. These work reliably over much greater distances because usually at least one will be getting a viable signal. I saw a boat give the same problem as described – when retrieved, it was noted that the RX had detached itself form where it was mounted and was hiding in the bottom of the hull. A single aerial is putting all the eggs in one basket and with 2.4, while the signal is very robust over distance, because the active bit is so small, it is much easier to hide from the transmitter than half a yard of 27MHz aerial wire.
