        hi fellow constructors,

well my oakley class hull and cabin mouldings just turned up and they look fantastic, its approx 37 inches long and looking at it i have a great journey ahead.

I have never worked with a fiberglass hull before and have my first few questions,

1 . on my hull comparing it to the plans from the RNLI what i would call the keel is not moulded on my hull,it goes from the bow down under and up the back of the hull(down the center)the rudder attatchs to it at the rear.

2 . what material am i best using for this and what adhesive would be best used.

3 . Or should i be starting elsewhere first ie prop shafts,or bulkheads.

i can upload pictures from the plans and the hull if it helps

        Kind Regards Gary

We will be able to give you better advice if you can tell us how complex a build you are undertaking e.g. is the model only intended to be viewed for the outside in which case the internal arrangement is not critical or are you intending to build a fully accurate model including all internal compartments and fixtures.

To explain…. traditionally the keel and frames (bulkheads) are the skeleton that support the outer hull but in the case of a model fiberglass hull this frame work is sometimes not required as the hull might be strong enough to support itself, when building my fiberglass Model Slipway Trent I didn't need to add a keel or frames which left lots of room for motors, batteries etc.

As for the adhesive it is best to contact Models by Design for the correct advice.

          Good luck

          Paul

            Hi Paul,
Thanks for your reply,Sorry i should have made myself clearer,im making a radio control lifeboat that I want to use on say a model boating lake or similar water.
Inside the hull will not be seen,
I really would like to make her look as close to my subject as possible – the st ives lifeboat from the 70’s – 80’s
            Frank Penfold Marshall.
Looking at photos of the Oakley class I have decided to construct my own cabin and I am going to have to make the for and aft raised decks as these are mot moulded on the hull,
I have taken a pic of my hull and the plan,on the plan I have crudely out lined the visible part of the keel that is missing from my hull in yellow.
I have decided to start here by constructing this then make a sturdy construction stand, then say the in whales to support the deck and strengthen the hull, then prop shafts, then the raised for and aft decks.
I am hoping the keel will ad scale realism and protection to the hull but wondered what material to use be it strips of wood layed down like a bread and butter style or I’m open to ideas.
I have contacted models by design re the best adhesive to use and am awaiting there reply.
            What do you think.
I will post the pics in the next hour.
            Kind Regards Gaz
