Hi new to this forum and would really appreciate any help you Can offer im building a display case for a model I have just finished it's almost a metre in length therefore the case needs to be quite big. I am really struggling with finding somewhere that I can buy the wood edges for my case as I am hopeless at using a router so need to buy the wood that has already got the grooves for my glass cut out I see Cornwall model boats sell these but only in 12mm x 12mm and it's not as thick as I would have liked as my case is going to be big they look to small. Does anyone no where else I can try to get wood with the grooves pre routed as I am seriously at a loose end

      many thanks in advance

      Jay

Have a look at the strip wood sections in your local DIY shed. Now imagine 2 or 3 of those sections laminated together to get the overall section that you want. Use a good quality wood glue for the laminating and plenty of clamps to hold it all together- some small panel pins put in to help keep it all in place would make life easier as well. You should be able to build up just about any cross section you want for your frame. One point to watch is keeping the glue away from any surfaces that you might want to stain or wiping any surplus off while it is still fresh.

              Hi Jay

I hope it all works out for you.

To use a router to make relatively small moldings you really need to mount the router in a table and use it like a small spindle molder, and unless you're doing a lot of that sort of work it gets to be too much hassle and expense of time to set up. The other thing to look at is picture framing as that often comes ready finished on the outer surfaces and with a rebate in the back already, with the addition of a piece of rectangular section strip wood you might get what you're looking for and a good finish as well, without too much effort.

              Good luck

              Keith

                Hi Jay,

i make display cases and carry boxes (the glass replaced with ply) by slotting 25mm square timber using a table saw.

Set the depth and I usually start the slot 10mm from the outer edge. I slot ALL the timber before cutting to length. Next cut to length and either have plain crossed ends or cut a 45' angle. It is usual to pass the timber at least twice over the blade to make the groove wide enough say 6mm for ply, as the saw blade may not be the required width.

For a case the whole is mounted on a base board, the glass slots home and is held in place with dabs of silica. The top is screwed on to give added support.

For a box, I slide ply in the grooves (made just bigger than the ply thickness to allow for the glue). The top or front, you decide, is left as a sliding fit so you can put the boat in.

                  Hello Jay,

draw up sections of what you need , go to local joiners shop , he will do the rest ,

cheaper than you think , as for glass a plastic type would be ideal and safer for transporting …

local timber yard s carry moulding racks, cheaper option cheers Larry…

                        Hi Jay.

Just read your posting, hence the delayed response. I would build the show case with plexiglass. Find a place they sell these and get them to cut all the pieces to the sizes you need (length x width x hight). Glue these together using acetone and get a timber base (probably marine plywood) varnish it with a mahogany stain/varnish. That is the simplest form of "cabinet" to display your model. No timber frames, nothing. If you have any reservations on using acetone to "glue" the plexiglass, search it on the internet. You will find plenty of guidance there. If in trouble let me know and I will try and find something for you. Hope this helps.Cheers
