      Hi All,

I am new to this forum, but not that new to model boat building.

After reading the Dave Wooley article building the Fleetscale type 45 and working for a compnay that made many components for the real thing I decided I wanted to build one myself!

When it arrived the task ahead soon dawned on me! All boats I had built in the past where 6 volt with one or two small motors and less then half the size and also the props on this boat are 2 1/2" diameter! I contacted my local shop and they recommend MFA 800 torpedo motors, 2 12 volt sla batteries, 2 viper marine ESC and a Action Electronics Parallel power board for two Batteries. Connected this all up and gave it a little test on my bench. I found I got a lot of buzzing from the motors when I move the sticks a little. I always struggle with the electrics and I am just looking for a couple of opinions on what you guys think to what I am doing so far and does this sound like the correct motors and is the buzzing normal?

      Many thanks,

      Ben

Ben, the motors will buzz a little and this is likely due to the ESc, There have been several threads on noisy ESC`s and there is no hope really. At a slightly faster pace this will go,mostly, and certainly once the motors are loaded up they will be quiet. My twin 800`s on the Fantome make simply a pleasant deep thrumming sound when on song.

As has been discussed on many forums since the start of the internet, all modern ESCs operate by switching on and off rapidly. The ratio of "on" to "off" determines the power offered to the motor, the wider the pulse, the more power.. Some ESCs have a very high switching rate, so high that human ears don't hear them, some operate at a lower frequency, and you do. As you move the throttle, power is applied, until there is enough power to actually move the motor, it will buzz, or hum, depending. Once everything is moving, the loudspeaker effect diminishes with the increase in mechanical noise, and, hopefully, distance.
