      Hi

As an absolute novice I have looked at what kind of boat I'd like to own and have concluded I'd love to own a Trent Class life boat.

looking at the pictures I doubt whether I'd be capable of achieving anywhere near the high quality finish that some people get, so my options look limited to buying a finished boat.

Having looked at budgets I reckon £500 upwards, so I'll have to save the pennies! In the meantime does anybody have any suggestions for a good starter boat? EBay is full of offerings and the more Ilook the more confused I get.

      cheers

      Kevin

Kevin. That is a bit defeatest old boy !!! have a go. Everyone starts somewhere. Get a hull and do the rest yourself. Go steady, ask questions and that will be that.

OR there must be a "beginners" style plan from a well known source of model plans (someone surf please, Colin)

Dont forget, everyone was a novice at some time!! (except Paul, he was just born an expert)

Great advice Ashley and a fair observation!

It's actually very nice to communicate with you guys I'm planning on visiting a local club and picking up a few tips, then I'll probably throw caution to the wind.
As to Paul I rather suspect he is an accomplished expert and good on him!
                Cheers

                    Thanks Larry.

                    Appreciate your time and advice.

i now find myself contemplating a build, which takes me onto looking at the tools I'd need to get started, I have the usual DIY kit but I'm sure there must be a range of tools that people utilise and also adhesives etc. this certainly could prove to be an interesting hobby, thankfully I have good facilities to use as a workshop.

                    Kind Regards

                    Kevin

Kevin. The only thing that i consider an essential (above having the usual drills and so on) is a bandsaw. A small bandsaw makes light work of cutting planks, frames..whatever. A thin blade as most hobby machines use will cut fairly tight curves.

Adhesives.. depends waht you are doing. Superglue, Epoxy (Araldite etc), an Aliphatic or waterproof PVA glue will see you alright for most things. Ashley

                        Kevin

If you don't have bottomless pockets you can get by quite comfortably with a drill, jigsaw, a few small clamps and a bottle of waterproof PVA.

                        Paul

I've lost enough sleep now thinking this over!

So using business skills I have populated my vision and goals.

The vision: To own top quality Trent and Severn Class lifeboats, to use both in displays in order to further support my chosen charity the RNLI.

Goal # 1. Purchase a completed model of the Trent Class built from a Speedline kit.

Goal # 2. Build a Severn Class boat using the speedline kit.

Goal #3. Get involved with the RNLI support team and put something back – I've been around boats since I was a kid and always felt safe because I knew the RNLI were there.

So if anybody has or knows of a topqualityTrent for sale let me know.

                            Cheers

                            Kevin
