Hi, whilst not a beginner, it has been a few years since I took up the modelling tools. Having now retired I decided I would re-enter the world of model boats and dug out some old hulls and radio gear. Hulls no problem, as nothing much has changed, however, after a bit of research on the radio side I discovered all had changed and the key phrase seems to be 2.4 Ghz! Having read various reviews I believe I understand the advantages of these new 'binding' capabilities but could do with a little help on the basics.

So if I may pick some brains with a couple of questions before I send the kids out for my birthday presents.

What are the most suitable transmitter types for 6 channel boat control. (The aircraft ones seem awfully complicated for boat operation)

Can I use the 27Mhz Servers, (of which I have dozens), with 2.4 Ghz receivers. Sorry I really am ignorant regarding the details of how the electronics work.

Any help will be greatfully appreciated, Gary

          Hi Gary,

Yes, 2.4Ghx is the standard these days as you don't need to worry about frequency clashes with crystal controlled sets.

You have a choice between the more expensive mainstream sets such as Futaba and Spektrum or the cheaper Asian imports such as Planet which many people find to be quite adequate for boat use although they may not have all the features of the more expensive sets. It's a matter of choice.

Your old 27mhz servos may not work too well with modern equipment as pulsing rates have changed and the plugs are unlikely to fit, but modern servos can be picked up for not much more than £5 these days.

For a good range of options, have a look at the Howes Models site: http://www.howesmodels.co.uk

Many boat modellers these days incorporate extra features into their models and the advertisers in Model Boats feature these. You might like to have a look at the ACTion R/C Electronics site to see the sort of things that are available although they are by no means the only supplier .**LINK**

Thank you Colin, that is most useful, I remember Craig at ACtion very well, I used to be a 'tester' for the instructions of his new boards I understand he has now passed.

One follow up question if I may? Of the transmitter types, I would like a basic operating mode, i.e. two sticks and switches, I've tried the computerised screen types for heli's and to be honest, they confused the hell out of me . The little research that I have carried out suggests that the Spektrum dx5e seems to meet this requirement, does this sound correct? Gary. ps Howes models is very close and I've been there a few times.

              Gary,

ACTion is now run by Craig's good friend Dave Milbourn and wife Liz. and has gone from strength to strength.

I think your choice of radio will depend on how many functions you need. I can't speak for the Spektrum DX5e although it would look to be a very sensible choice, but I have a DX6e which is very good and also a Futaba 6EX. I wouldn't worry too much about the screen functions as you don't have to use all the bells and whistles. As stated above, many people find the cheaper Asian sets perfectly OK for model boating so in the end it's really a matter of what you prefer. The higher end sets feel nicer with better build quality but the cheaper ones seem to work perfectly well.

I prefer Futaba or Spektrum for my better models but I have used simple two channel Acoms sets for my kit reviews.

Maybe your best bet would be to call into Howes and discuss your requirements.

              Colin

                Hi Gary

I am very new to the RC world and i have the planet T5 trans with the R6M receiver.

It was so easy to set up a push of a button and done .

it so easy to use as well for a 2 chanel set up that im useing on the boat and it has a display that tell you the volts of batterys

Go in during the morning and ask for John Cox – he's the guy who knows about boats. NB Howes are shut on Wednesdays.
