      Hi All

I am about to jump both feet into this hobby after several RC subs, Tanks and Aircraft built and operated still. Which is the better quality model from the above companies or are they both equal in terms on money and quality. Mountfleet are more expensive, but do you get value for the money. I am looking at their tugs from WW2 and the reviews I have read online are several years old

      Thanks for the help

      Dave G

There is a thread on "the other forum" about Model Slipway kits. I'm professionally biased and I've never built a Mountfleet kit anyway, but I'd say you'll not regret buying a Slipway kit. A lot of people would agree with me on that.

Havent built a Mountfleet so have no reason to critisize, they are lovely looking models when finished but have built 3 MS kits and cant praise them highly enough. Customer services first class, product first class and Jackie can never do enough to help anyone who contacts her.

I have built a number of Mountfleet's including the big daddy of them all thwe St Nectan trawler, and they are good models, but so are Slipway…..it all depends upon what model prototype you want to build, rather than picking something just because it is a good kit…………If you have the passion you can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear with any kit, if you work at it.

I agree with Neil, choose the subject first and then find the best kit.

                    Thanks guys

I went with the Model Slipway Assurance Tug as this was the one I looked at first getting. Looking forward to the build and getting back into ships. I did build a Dumas Triple cockpit Chriscraft 10 years ago and with all the strip planking and sanding stuff it was a tedious build. Did not want to do another for a while. Any more info would be greatly appreciated.

                      Hi Dave

I have never built the Assurance tug but I do know that the team at Model Slipway are always available to answer questions when you get stuck on a build, I found this out whilst putting the Trent together.

                      Hi Neil

Yes I am getting better slowly and I hope to get some models in the water this season. How is the King coming on?

                      Paul

Hi Paul..glad you're feeling a little better…………haven't started the KO yet……….it's going to be my swan song………but have found a hull from Clydemodelships ( Kim) that is/was almost identical to KO and built at the same time…made at 1:48 scale…….it's a beauty of a hull, so am going to build her on that when I go for it..at the mo am building three lifeboats at the same time…. see here… http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=34379.0

and I'm almost finished them, then there's a couple more lifeboats……and then I think the King Orry.

sorry for hijacking your thread, Dave…the Assurance is a lovely tug to build….a friend made one and they are a lovely ship…there are threads on Mayhem and RCMB forums about the build….you might be interested in those………. http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=33204.0

                        and http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1589389&highlight=assur+class+tug

                        hope these help you initially.

Thanks for the links Neil. Since I will have to wait about a month for the kit I thought I might get some parts ordered. Anyone have an idea on porthole size and number of portholes on the Assurance. I like the idea of preglazed portholes I have seen mentioned in some builds.

                          thanks

                          Dave

Dave : On the subject of portholes and windows in general I use a craft product called Acetate which is an A4 sized sheet of clear, flexible and yet strong plastic type material.

Neil: Why will the KO be your swan song is it really going to take so long to build? I am looking forward to seeing the 1:48 hull (any photos)

Well, Paul……the arthritis in my fingers is getting so bad that it is painfull even holding craft knives these days, so as a scratch build…it'll be my last………Kit's I'm ok with as all the parts are cut out these days…….but cutting timber and plasticard is painful.

I don't think there are any photos of the hull but will have a look.

David…..all the portholes come with the kit…….they are very complete models…..only lacking paint glue and r/c gear.

it's based on a ship called the T S Viper paul……can't find a hull but if you look up Viper on google you'll see it is very similar….and I reckon would do nicely.
