This is my first thread input on this site. Mainly fly rc planes (member of the sister, Model Flying). Actually have a couple of r/c boats, just to try it out. Built one years ago, and only recently (3 years ago) fitted the r/c gear, even though the motor was fitted years ago.

Am thinking of buying a model of the Titanic, as you can imagine has always been in my mind, from early days at school, to now, approaching the 100th Anniversary of the event.

            Hi Paul,

            Welcome aboard.

Titanic hmm, you need a big one to get the best detail, 3 or 4 Metres would be a nice size.

            Where are you based?.

            Len.

                Hi Paul

What kind of build are you thinking of?

Wood or plastic….kit or plans…small enough for the bath or large enough to get in to.

                Paul

Hi Paul. very nice to see you back on the forum!! long time no post and I hope you are as well as may be.

Len has a point, but unfortunately most of us dont have lorries to transport our ships about.. I built a Titanic to fit in the boot of the car, perhaps then a Mintanic. Oddly enough most of my boats are 4 feet long. When asked what scale this of that boat is, I say "4 feet" !! Perusing my photos will find a scratch built ship, with minimal detail but still looking like the real thing at 10 feet or so…

What can be achieved in a few months..and so on to the next one !!

There is a LOT of detail on something like the big T.. one decision has to be;- the full monty or "stand off scale".

                    Hi Ashley

I'm firiing on 3 cylinders at the moment, which isnt too bad for a V8.

You might remember I built a rather large Titanic a few years ago and it ended up sitting at the back of the workshop until I sold it..

You are right about transport problems but then again Len is right about needing size to show detail.

How is your young apprentice doing?

                      Paul, you old seafarer you.

As I typed, I was reminded that you had a (two part?) large Titanic but couldnt remember if you had sold it.

The young apprentice prefers to slob at home instead of braving the icy blasts out on the pond, but actually enjoys it once out. Likes showing off to all and sundry and actually can remember all the drivel regarding the boats that I have told him, to pass on to an admiring audience.

Tricky business this.. deciding what size and hence scale to make a boat.

I think you have to think of the practicalities of it all. Transport and weight etc. My car accomodates a boat 4 feet long (as positioned widthways) and so this is basically the size I build to. I can then carry other boats/planes or whatever to the pond to max on the diversity.

A 4 foot Titanic can be made to show lots of detail if you have the patience, but this detail is lost at 20 feet or so, and a fully detailed Titanic would not show to be that much better than mine when out on the high sea (most of the time). see my photos.

                      Ashley

I'm in Cheshire. My main interest is planes, but there is no harm taking a little sideline.

If I do buy/build Titanic, I would want independant engine controls, i.e. able to stop/start/reverse the main wing engines, and control the central to full and stop only, as per original ship.

Also have a OS 10FP M, and wouldn't mind making a IC powered boat, but don't think there are anywhere I would be able to run it.
