picked up a deans destroyer [part built – problem is prop shafts are installed with oiler tubes at bottom end of hull, just in side and around waterline – problem is if i extend oilerv tubes to above water line will lube reach top of shaft at motor end – or do i rip them out and correct it properly – lots of work at motors etc all in place as well

      cheers

Weird! Are the propellors mounted at the inboard end?!

Oiler tubes are not essential, just a convenience. Maybe you could just blank them off and lubricate by withdrawing the shafts every now and again.

ian. If you were to incline the boat whilst oiling the shafts then i would fully expect the top of the shaft to recieve lubrication when filling up !

Moreover, if the tube extension were to stay above the top of the shaft (when the boat is horizontal) and oil were to remain in this tube at a level of the top of the shaft then this would also guarantee lube staying at the top.

Dont bother with oil myself, just a few drips either end before sailing. I prefer nylon bearings as they are self-lubricated by the water gushing through..

Ashley, I see where you’re coming from with filling the riser tube with oil – the hydrostatic (or should that be oleostatic) pressure from the column of oil in the riser will force oil up the shaft tube. Only trouble is, unless the bottom bearing is sealed that same pressure will dump most of the oil out the prop end of the tube. Reading both your and Colin’s advice, if it were me I’d blank the oilers off and oil each end before and after sailing.
