A must for me is my drawing board AO size with parallel slide…….i have it hinged at one end of the workshop so that when not in use it can be lifted up and hooked up to the ceiling, thus giving me access to the work bench and shelves behind……takes the largest of plans and gives me somewhere to study them folded open……wouldn’t be without it.

oh yes, and my telly too. wouldn’t be without that either…..when else could i keep up with bargain hunt and emmerdale, lol

It might seem to be a daft question but what kind of model boats are you building….wood, plastic………kits or scratch build…….what scale (size)
Answers to these questions will dictate what tools you will need.

I am starting with kits at the min as i am new to model boats and do not get much time to do the more difficult boats

Kits dont usually require many expensive tools……..but to be exact could you tell us what type of kits you intend to build.
i.e. the plastic ‘Airfix’ type or the larger and more complex ‘Model Slipway’ type.

I have not done this but for a space saving and access to a plan, you could attach a Plan to a Roller Blind then you could wind it down to see it then wind it up to keep it out of the way.

Hello Tommy. Welcome to a fantastic world. I have in my studio a bench in the middle of the room. Then I can work on both sides of the model. Around this bench is the bench in a horseshoe shape. Then I can work on topics for the model on both sides also. Just spin around with the chair.

Thank you Len for the great tips. That solves the problem I have with big plans. I must have them on the floor or anywhere else. In fact a problem.

                          Workarea

Plenty of space and as much natural light as you can get,

Like most model builders I have the usual workshop outside (shed) with all of the larger power tools where I can make as much noise and dust as I like but inside I have a spare bedroom fitted out as a quiet workshop with a horseshoe shaped bench (kitchen worktops) where the main working area is under the window.

Be comfortable with a decent chair set at the right height for the workbench and make provision to get your knees under the bench when sitting down.

Plenty of power sockets within easy reach of where you are working….I use a 6 socket extention lead fixed to the wall above the bench.

Good lighting for those dark evenings…dont depend upon the bulb in the ceiling go and buy a decent angle poise lamp with a daylight bulb.

Radio…CD player ….TV…..all of these help create a comfortable workarea and for me a dust free space for the laptop and printer.

Two rubbish bins (I use kitchen swing top bins) one for recycling…a dustpan and brush or better still a small hoover with a hose as keeping the room clean and tidy is high on my list of requirements for a comfortable workarea.
