Hello to experienced power boaters. I have just bought a 42″ power boat hull  and deck on ebay (mine is used but they are currently available new) and plan to build it for occasional non-racing use.
I plan to use a 820BB race motor (surplus used from work), Robbe 60A 36v heli controller and 2 x 12D cell nicad packs(these are ex-emergency lighting and I have run them at more than 25A). It’s a heavy setup but the boat looks big enough. I also have a Futaba 27Mhz radio from rc sailing days.
My problem is that I have no idea of what size or type prop to use as a starting point in a surface piercing arrangement or even if this is a good idea. I would be grateful for advice on a prop, and any general advice,
      Alan

Alan. i am NOT an experienced power boater, but i think that for occasional fast use you ought to forget a surface piercing prop setup and go for a “normal” propshaft (5mm) or perhaps an out-drive (Graupner do one). Surface piercing is a bit of a specialised thing and I have a feeling that unless the hull is suitable and all your bits are right, it will be very inefficient.

I reckon a 50mm 2 blade x type prop should do you as a starting point, or even smaller, as overload on a motor that powerfull will start to draw some serious amps. The GP820 says 20v nominal, and although it says suitable 16-24V, running it at its absolute max will do it no good with too big a prop.

I think the beauty of a boat that size and likely speed is its “presence” on the water. That well  planted look, not bobbing up and down over every little wave, but ploughing through  the waves in  masterful fashion. Watch the wash, My Seahawk and Fantome of similar or larger size respectively create a huge wash, capable of dousing tugs and such. NOT that i do that sort of thing you understand..

          PS dont forget the driver!!!

            Ashley,
thanks for that reply, sounds like wise advice on reflection; I will probably go for a conventional prop as you suggest, but I’ll keep an eye out for a Graupner outboard or outdrive on ebay as this will probably be an easier installation.
I agree 100% with your thoughts on presence on the water; my last r/c boat was a very heavy displacement 36″ yacht which looked terrific in winds which would keep others indoors, big bow and quarter waves at full speed.
Also, I intend to make it look like a large speedboat rather than an offshore racer, so I will definitely include a driver/pilot,
            best wishes,
            Alan
