Hi My dad wishes to build a model of the terra nova the ship that scott went to antarctica on. I would like to get him a kit for him to start off on.  Does anyone do one – it is specialised.  Or else if he needs to make a model from scratch are there any key books which I can get him to start him off.  He is quite artistic and very good and making things so I think he’ll get into this.  thanks Zoe

          Hi Zoe.

This is a difficult one I can’t find any reference to a model kit of the Terra Nova so I can only suggest that your father builds his own.

The best reference source that I have found is a book titled From The Arctic to the Antarctic, Whaler, Sealer and Polar Exploration Ship. Written by Michael Tarver and published by Pendragon Maritime Publications.

You could also try the archives of the British Antarctic Expedition at Cambridge University as they have quite an extensive set of records.

Sorry I can’t help any further but maybe another member will have better luck.

          All the best

          Paul

Try contacting the Scott Society here in Cardiff .Scott Sailed from Cardiff off into the frozen pages of history and also we have a monument to Scott in Roath park. You could try contacting the manager at the Royal Hotel ,St.Mary street ,Cardiff as for how to get in touch with them. Also try Cardiff Museum as they may be able to help you, also Airfix produced a Terra Nova model kit perhaps your dad could build this and use it as rerence. While i think of it Brains Brewery, our local ale, have got a pub called the Terra Nova give them a shout they may be able to help with pictures ,info ,etc.

            good luck and happy sailing

                Ahoy Captain Bob

You are right that Scott sailed in the Discovery, all be it the RRS Discovery (Royal Research Ship) but in fact Scott led two expeditions.

His first expedition, in the ship Discovery, took place between 1901–04 and was half funded by the Government. Discovery was specially built for the voyage, as a research ship to go through icy seas.

In 1910, he sailed on another scientific voyage, this time in the Terra Nova, originally a whaler. Not Government funded this time so Scott had to raise funds himself, At the time it was noted that children were very happy to donate for the dogs and ponies.

The end of the Terra Nova.

In 1942 she was chartered to carry supplies for US bases in Greenland. On Sunday 12 September that year, while on a passage from Greenland to Newfoundland, she developed a bad leak and at 19.20 hours transmitted an SOS message. This was answered by the US Coast Guard Cutter Atak, which, by daybreak next day, had picked up the crew of 24 men from the burning Terra Nova, by now in a sinking condition.

The Master of the Terra Nova was the last man to board the Atak, which then finished her off with 23 rounds of 3-inch gun fire. Her approximate last position was 60°30’N 46°30’W, off the Southwestern coast of Greenland.

Its a shame that such a famous ship should have such a sad end.

                  Ahoy there!

Thank you for your excellent story Paul!

I used to look at the Discovery in the 70`s, when it was parked up on the Thames……..think it`s been moved since

                    Yo Ho Ho Cap’n Bob

The Discovery has been in Dundee (where it was built in 1901) since 1986.
