Hi Steve
Capacitors are fitted to the brushes of motors to reduce interferance from the brushes sparking affecting the R/C equipment.
You don’t give any info on the motors (type/make), however if you want more power out of any motor, you will need to put more power in, with electricity power is volts X amps, so if you use the same voltage (6v) then you will take more current.
Since the speed of a dc motor is (nominally) proportional to the voltage I would have tried upping the voltage with the original setup (possably to 7.2v nicad pack) to get higher revs. higher voltage won’t kill the motor, but higher current will cook it.
Matching the correct size prop with any motor/battery combination is one of the most critical parts of fast electrics.
Hope this helps cheers
Tom
