      Hi All,

Well the next sailing cruiser design is on it’s way, the Fictional character Tom Howards boat to save the boatyard in the 1980’s series Howards Way must be considered a classic from the designer Tony Castro, I will do my best 🙂 I made the big investment a while back with the DF95 carbon fin and bulb !! what’s £125 so far to re create some history 🙂

As I have drafted the lines so I’m making a full scale foamboard mock up , watch this space

Very nice Ray, I hadn’t realised how broad the stern was. Also an interesting comparison with the internal layout compared with my Jaguar 25. Looking up photos on the internet, I think maybe the Jaguar had a better layout as the fore cabin was separated from the saloon by the heads compartment and wardrobe space. The Jaguar only had a single berth under the narrower cockpit and my boat had an outboard which saved on internal space. The Spring was the better sailer though and a more modern boat.

The wing keel and twin rudders should make for an interesting sailing model.

            Hi Colin,

Yes a clever design maximum space internally in a small boat giving it a big boat feel 🙂 Interesting that the first batch of Springs were made by Jaguar Yachts on Canvey Island, I went there a couple of times for bits for my Jaguar 21 and saw them being built in 1988.

Twin rudders should be interesting going to stick with the fin keel though.

            Regards  Ray

Ray, a lot used to be made of how many berths you could cram in to a small sailing cruiser as a selling point. The Spring claimed six but that would have been very crowded indeed. My Jaguar claimed five. But the most I ever had aboard was three, one in the forepeak, one aft under the starboard cockpit seat while I, as owner & captain, sprawled out on the saloon double and very nice it was too!

Normally on a trip it would just be two of us with the forepeak used to store gear. The boat felt really roomy under those conditions.

My lift keel Jaguar 21 was definitely two only.

At the fabled fictional village called Tarrant in Howards’ Way (a Frankenstein collage of Bursledon, Hamble and Hythe) I worked on the conversion of the Laser 28 for the series which was called the Flying Fish. The original version was stripped out for racing and we gave it a conventional layout. Of the three featured boats, this was the only one not designed by Tony Castro.  Tony design designed the Barracuda of Tarrant as well as the Spring.
My car nearly featured in one episode outside the yacht club.  They came looking for me and asked me  to move it!

I grew up between Bursledon and Hamble and spent much time at the Tarrant Boatyard (Elephant Boatyard).  Happy days and I loved the series.

Very interesting Tim, I have been to the Hamble a couple of times, once in the boat – very high parking fee! Sailed up Southampton Water several times and even into the Ocean Dock – I doubt if that would be allowed now.

The series was recently repeated on TV, rather showing its age in a lot of respects, but the sailing and powerboat scenes and races still hold up very well.

Hi All, well at least there are 3 of us 🙂

I was in contact with the current owner of Spring of Tarrant which is going through refurbishment via Facebook, I may try to get down to see her and take photos, the markings and graphics on the boat is probably the biggest challenge I foresee 🙁

The series had a good line up of fast sailing boats and women as I recall 🙂

Obviously I have the DVD box set !

                    Regards  Ray

                      Hi All,

Some respite from the scorching weather now, cool north easterly wind making it time to get back onto the Springs bulkheads 🙂

                      Regards  Ray

4 of us Ray, though I admit I’m an infrequent visitor now! Good to see that you’ve made a start on Spring. I recently managed to rewatch all the episodes. Some of it does look a little dated but not too bad compared with some other programmes. Quite a few of the cast are no longer with us and it was sad to see that the actors playing Tom Howard and Charles Freres roles died early, particularly the former.

The sailing and racing was good and I saw a Fairey Spearfish I think! They did do a lot of drinking! Women, what women, I never noticed! Liar!

                          Hi All,

After a few days away in Wales I’m back on the Spring !!

All the main parts cut out lots of time saved with the stepped drills which are marvellous 🙂

                            Hi All,

The Spring is ready for the planking now, it’s my usual format of build so I’m not surprised there are few comments , always good when I’m planning the two builds after this one 🙂

Wivenhoe Lass in the September issue 🙂

Hi Ray, making good progress as usual. Spring’s quite short and wide for a sailing yacht isn’t she.

I’ve tried commenting on various posts recently but keep having problems with it saying I’m logged out when I’m not and not letting me comment again.
