OK Gents, I think the time has come to say something that I have been toying with for some time now.  As  of this very moment in time the last post made on this forum was over three days ago.  When I think of all he struggles that we initially went through to get this forum transferred from the existing MTM forum and all the time and effort that went into trying to move all the existing archives over to the new format I can’t help but feel incredibly disappointed.  I have been a member of many forums in the past and seen a good few moved to new severs and every single time the old archives were lost.  Mainly because no-one could be bothered putting the time and effort required into transposing the archives.  We were incredibly lucky to have someone prepared to do that and so we still have access to everything.

Then, again, when Mortons sold up to Kelsey, we thought the forum was going to be lost at that point and yet, again by the skin of our teeth, we kept the forum going.  If anyone from Kelsey management now looked at this forum I think they would be very disappointed to see how much it is used and would find it very hard to justify the effort and funds that went into keeping it going.  I realise that there are still ongoing issues that will never be resolved, because the forum software simply isn’t at the sophisticated level we may be used to in other forums we enjoy.  I am also aware that connectivity to certain devices doesn’t work and again, probably never will, but is it really too much to ask that the regular users on here take a minute or two each day to look in and make a post?  All the regular users seem to have drifted away, while also spending time complaining that we can’t attract newcomers into the hobby.  If I was a potential newcomer looking in on this forum would I see anything that would potentially attract me to want to join?  I doubt it.

We don’t need to post build threads every time, we don’t need lengthy tutorials, we are lucky enough to be provided with a free communications service whereby we can exchange ideas, conversation and encouragement to newcomers free of charge.  And yet there are those who still complain that they find it too difficult.  If Kelsey look in here and decide that it is no longer viable to maintain the forum I hope there won’t be suggestions that it is the fault of the software, or connectivity, or any other excuse.  The only reason that this forum would be closed down is apathy, and loosing the facility and the archives would be a great shame.

        Hi Richard,

I don’t know if it’s an issue for others but for the last week or so I’ve been experiencing the ‘not logged on’ issue. I appear to be logged on but don’t see recent posts and can’t post myself. I use a Windows PC (as i’m sure many others do) and it can take some time messing around with cookies  and alternative browsers to resolve this – sometimes I have to wait and try again later.

        NotLoggedOn

I do percevere and view the forum every day but I can see how this may be frustrating for some users and it could be contributing to the reduction of posts. This isn’t a complaint, just a comment on one possible reason for reduced activity.

Personally, I’ve only taken up model boating in the last couple of years so don’t have the experience to offer advice in most cases. I do enjoy reading what others are up to, especially the more unusual builds and would be dissapointed to see the forum disappear.

        Dave.

Unfortunately Richard, we can’t really argue with what you say. Sadly the damage was done and folks moved to or increased participation in other forums due to the issues which still continue to occur and will have put off original members from returning and attracting new ones. As I’ve said before my main method of accessing forums is via my Android tablet sitting on my comfortable sofa and I only ever visit this forum if using my PC which I don’t use as often as my tablet. Difficulties for Android users, both tablets and phones, takes out a lot of potential users.

I have got my tablet to access it now and again but I haven’t bothered for a long time and have stopped reporting problems.

As we’ve mentioned before, traffic has reduced a lot on forums whilst that on Facebook Groups increases even though they have disadvantages over forums which is why I use both.

Even Mayhem is a shadow of its former self as is the RC Groups Boat section.

I don’t need to tell you that lack of traffic is self-perpetuating. I haven’t posted anything on my build blogs for sometime, mainly because I don’t do much on them in the summer but also because sometimes I think why bother if hardly anyone is going to look at them? Yes, I know that means I’m now part of the problem! Apart from builds I don’t really have much to say and if others don’t post I don’t have anything to comment on either.

          Chris

Hi All, (who ever that maybe 🙂 )

I can’t disagree with either Richard’s or Chris’s comments, very sad 🙁 but a sign of the times I suppose.

Even when I post something controversial about the magazine, no body rises to the bait 🙂  🙁

Just to add to what I said. Given what has been said in the past about Kelsey’s attitude towards forums it was great that it was saved but unfortunately without committing resources to solve the technical issues then ultimately this forum is only destined to go one way.

I know that there may not be the budget, due to profitability of the magazine or the will of the owners to sort the problems properly but without it the forum is hamstrung. I also know that forum users and magazine readers can be different groups but you would think that they could be mutually beneficial and more of an overlap formed and the forum should be promoted more in the magazine as this is a potential advantage that most forums don’t have.

                Hi Chris,

A couple of weeks ago I had an invoice for my Lysander article to send in, so as Kelsey Media’s office is near to me in Maidstone I nipped over there to hand deliver it 🙂 chatting to one of the guys there Kelsey now publish around 100 hundred titles currently so you can see our magazine is a very small part of their operation, It would seem logical that as they bought Morton’s as a job lot of titles maybe for the profitable ones ie RCM&E and maybe Model Engineer ?

The forum on both my Android devices phone and tablet are still roughly 3 weeks behind with the posts which these days is not much use to anyone ??

                Regards  Ray

Mortons made the wrong choice for hosting the forum. Prior to them buying the titles, MyTimeMedia had already begun converting their forums starting with Model Flying It took a while to get it right but they did succeed so the template was effectively ready for converting the MB and ME forums which should have been fairly straightforward. Unfortunately everything got put on hold during the Covid epidemic. When Mortons bought the magazines they decided they wanted to integrate the forums into their WordPress platform. Several people advised them not to but they went ahead anyway with very unfortunate consequences.

The Model Flying forum uses Invision and is not integrated into WordPress, it is just linked. Had Mortons continued with the MTM conversions it would have saved a lot of grief and given us several years of use. However, Invision itself shut down last year and things seem to be continuing under the auspices of the Invision Community for the moment. There are apparently migration options from Invision to other forum software applications but it all looks very complicated and maybe expensive.

If one was starting from scratch  then phBB would be a good option. I am a moderator on Ferry Forums which uses this and it is very smooth and easy to use, light years ahead of this one and Mayhem. It does help that our senior moderator and de facto owner is an IT expert and fine tuned everything to a high degree.

Underlying all this is the fact that it is not just that this forum is awkward to use, although that is a major factor. The fact is that the number of model boaters continues to decline at an alarming rate. As Chris says above, Mayhem activity has fallen away drastically over the last year or so and many of the members are clearly no longer building anything themselves.

I’ve often wondered why the Model Engineering forum is that bit more active than here.  Possibly they are lucky to have one or two characters who are quite prolific in their posting.  They may well slide into the same direction as they start to post a lot less.

From what seems to have been posted over recent months it seems the biggest challenges are with Android users, which, of course, many phones use.  I don’t even have a smart phone so don’t see that side of the frustration.

HI I am really sorry to hear what you are saying about the forum Richard as I have found it immensely useful as a newcomer to the hobby. Not least your own expert advice. I dont want to take away from what you say about people needing to post more often, as it is very fair. The problem for me, however, is, as others have identified that it is SO difficult to log in to the forum. I have given up logging in by my phone and only look at the forum when I am on my laptop as a result.  Even then, logging on took twenty attempts this evening. I don’t say that to take away from what you are saying, but it is a real problem and I dont have it on any other site. I hope we keep the forum going.

On the wider point about the decline in the number of model boat builders, this saddens me greatly – I suspect that we are presently living through an era when the human attention span has declined measurably, and declined beyond a point where making something that takes months is outside the realms of most people’s imagination.

I think that is a major part of the problem Alastair.  Younger generations nowadays want a quick result for their efforts so the idea of building something that might takes years is of no interest to them.  All we can do is try to enjoy as much as we can of what there is left and let future generations take their own courses.

Sadly the software challenges we see here are probably never going to get resolved as there is no incentive at all for those holding the purse strings to fund what needs doing.  Hopefully we can keep it going but with more and more relying totally on mobile phones for access and the challenges on here being mostly mobile phone access related it really doesn’t help.

Yes, my phone and tablet are both Android which are used by a large chunk of the population and nowadays many folks don’t have computers/laptops. If I didn’t have the latter I wouldn’t be on here.

Edit: Just done a search and in the UK it’s pretty much an equal split between Android and Apple users and globally over 2/3 are Android so that’s a significant amount that can’t access the site reliably.

I’ve tried clearing the cache/cookies on my tablet (which you shouldn’t have to do – no problems with other forums) but I then have to re-enter my passwords for the many other forums I use which is a pain and often doesn’t make any difference anyway.

You could try installing another web browser on your device and use it exclusively for this web site. Then if you have to clear it’s cache and cookies it won’t affect your other forums.

I know it’s a pain and not a true fix but it could make the situation a little more tolerable.

                                        Hi All,

The lack of model building is a direct result of the schools doing away with the technical subjects ie Woodwork, Metalwork and technical drawing 35 years ago :-(for the last 50 years the establishment has looked down it’s nose at manual skills to the extent that you need a Degree to be successful in a career, which is utter tosh, I guess most of us served our time learning a skill and going to night school ? kids now have to stay in education till they are 18, this was done in the early 90’s to keep the unemployment numbers down, and serves no use to youngsters who are capable, but not academic me included with City & Guilds , which nobody ever ask ed to see and took 3 years 🙂

PS I was pretty good rugby player !!

Hi Ray – As someone who stayed in full-time education till I was 28, I am maybe not in a very strong position to answer that one! though I did work on a ship in the summer! But I completely take your point about the decline in practical skills out there and indeed many kids never see anyone use a toolbox. I was lucky to have a Dad who could fix stuff, so making model boats seemed a natural enough thing to do. Fewer people have any of those experiences, as you say. Anyway, I am sounding a bit older than I actually am with those comments!

I did attend a Grammar school and there was some technical drawing which I was not much good at! I wasn’t much good at the language stuff either and ended up with A levels in English and Economics.

Many years later I discovered that I had an aptitude for computer programming with databases and it buttressed much of my later career with no formal training. I discovered I was good at digital problem solving but it was all self taught.

My model making developed separately starting with the usual Airfix models and extending into making scratch built model boats which I have continued with ever since. It was always nice to have  a hands on practical hobby in contrast to my ‘white collar’ based employment responsibilities.

I have always been aware of the balance between practical and paperwork skills and valued both, my career was based on a mixture of then two and worked out pretty well overall. Maybe I was lucky, many people are good at one or the other but don’t have the opportunity to exploit both. Luckily it worked for me. I have a foot in both camps.

I started on model building as I had an older brother (7 years). He started me on the Airfix kits and he used to buy the Model Maker, which got me into model boats. Over the years I have been into Model Railway, Warhammer figures painting and back to model boats.

I consider myself to be very lucky to have gone through a very good grammar school system.  When I chose my specialist subjects after the first two years I was intending becoming an architect so went with woodwork and building drawing as core subjects.  We had a superb metalwork shop with machine tools, a beautiful woodwork shop with lathes and all sorts of superb tools and, between the two, a combined workshop that even included two forges.  Can you imagine a school teaching kids on a forge nowadays! After I sailed through ‘O’ levels, being completely disillusioned by school and facing the prospect of nine more years in education, I rebelled and got thrown out after the first year of ‘A’ level.

Luckily my father still had contacts in his shipping company that he worked with and very luckily a lad had dropped out of the year’s intake of engineer cadets  so, after a summer of working in a pub, my Dad decided he needed to drive the situation and two weeks later I found myself at Riversdale College of Technology doing four years of Marine Engineering.  I loved every minute there.  The theoretical side was supported with a lot of workshop time which included work on all sorts of machine tools, examples of marine switchboards to work on and a large number of pieces of marine machinery saved from scrapped ships that we used to dismantle and report on.  We even did welding training.  I think I went through one of the best technically based educations there has ever been and I despair nowadays at the lack of value that we give to technical educations.  When I compare the UK with the likes of Germany, who hold technical careers in very high regard, it makes me realise how far we have fallen behind.

From the heady days of The QE2, The E-type Jaguar, The Harrier and Concorde, we have deteriorated into to a country who have thrown manufacturing to the wall.
