      Hi all,

Well finally had the space to start a build and sent for an Aeronaut kit which I am looking forward to building.

However I have noticed an issue with a mahogany sheet of laser cut components; there is a line going lengthways along the sheet and it looks like glue has been used to join it. The mahogany is two distinctly different shades and this runs through the keel and cabin components. The light makes it look like it is not so pronounced at the top but it is really the same throughout like the bottom of the pic.  I fear this would mean a poor end result once varnish is applied. The other mahogany sheet is fine.

      Is there an easy fix?

An interesting image. It is difficult to glue sheet edge to edge without being obvious so it could be a feature of the sheet. Mahogany is a difficult modelling wood due to its relatively open grain.

We have some people on here who may be able to advise you, but the solution might be to apply mahogany wood stain to the lighter side to help even up the colouration. Then an additional application across the sheet to blend the two sides further. You will end up with a darker overall finish but it should then be consistent and still acceptable.

Do some tests on scrap material at the ends or on cut out material first to check out the options.

You may need to stain the other sheet to match!

My first thought was along the same lines as Colin  but, as he suggests, it will all end up quite a bit darker and the difference may still be visible.

If it was myself I would ask the vendor to exchange the kit and, if they refuse you could try approaching Aeronaut themselves for a replacement.   At the end of the day I would not consider that sheet to be fit for purpose.  The trouble is, if you try to do anything yourself first, then you will never be able to exchange it and you will be stuck with it.

The first thing would be to contact the vendor and tell them you are not happy with it.  If they start trying it on with wood being a natural product and there is no guarantee of colour etc..etc.. then point out that variations in colour does not include a completely different colour between some components, the two sides of the cabin being two totally different colours and the transom being half one colour and half another colour.  The colour variations you have in that sheet are, to me anyway, beyond reasonable.

I’m rather inclined to agree with Richard, get the kit replaced if you can.

Many thanks for the replies Colin and Richard. You have confirmed what I was thinking. Hopefully I can get things sorted soon and I can make a start on a build.

It is a bit disappointing when this sort of thing happens which reflects inadequate quality control. Unfortunately this does happen sometimes.

One plus of scratch building is that you do have full control of the quality of your model.

                  Hi All,

Just a thought you won’t be able to see both sides of the boat at once make a feature out of it and have one side light and the other darker, the transom in 2 tone lends it self to this approach with the cabin sides matching it ??

BTW I use Mantua Models mahogany sheet it’s very good.

                  Regards Ray

And if it all looks wrong then it will be a case of 101 Damnations….

Well, everyone agreed it was clearly a fault and was told I would get a replacement board. It kept failing to arrive each time I was given a new date for delivery. Fed up with emails and phone calls, I decided I had enough and sent the kit back for a refund. About a month on and I have now got a refund (although I am out of pocket for the postage to return the kit).

I am going to leave it a while but will be on the look out for an easy building kit for a first boat build that grabs my fancy. I will avoid mahogany for now. Something along the lines of the Victoria.

                        Any suggestions?

Krick do fairly good standard kits.  They use a plastic hull with pre-cut ply structures internally and pre cut wood parts for any superstructure. It depends if you want to plank a hull or prefer a ready made hull and concentrate on the internals.

Dean’s Marine tend to require a bit more input from the builder so maybe not so straightforward for a first build.  Billing Boats have quite a wide range, which includes plastic hulls as well as plank on frame construction, so well worth a look at.

Thanks Richard, I will give them a look.
