      For what its worth.

I am not putting this forth as a cure for anything – just my experience.    I am very happy with the way the hospital dealt with me, and treated me. and am amazed by the improvement of vision.    At the back of my mind, I also felt that I was probably “clutching at straws!”

For several years, I was told I had macular degeneration in the left eye.   Although I could see with it generally, for the last couple of years, I could not read with it, and this got in the way of model making as well.

I noticed that when the hospital dilated the pupil to see how it was going, I could read again until the dilation effects wore off.

I kept hinting at cataract surgery, and it kept getting put off saying that it would probably not make much difference.

Last year, one macular consultant said I “may” have macular degeneration, but he wasn’t sure on account of the cataract, and he recommended to the glaucoma consultants that I get the surgery.     It was still delayed, but after they agreed, the waiting time was about a month.

On Wednesday, 4th June, 2025,  last, I got the surgery done, although they still said beforehand that I might not get the outcome I wanted    Newspaper headlines and text are now jet black, and I can read with it again.   Only thing is a slight bit of distortion just right of centre, but I have had that for 40 years, and it has no effect on reading or model-making, and is not apparent anyway with both eyes open. and I am delighted with the result.

Excellent news Bob – that has obviously cheered you up. Just been for an eye checkup myself this afternoon to monitor condition of my good eye and told it is appears to be stable. There is a defect but hopefully it will stay that way.

Lost confidence on local hospital eye clinic so seeing a private consultant – he is acknowledged as one of the top 100 consultant Ophthalmologists in the world. He also works for the NHS. Very nice man.

Hope it goes well.      Even during the lockdown, they never stopped seeing me.   I had quite a few injections for macular degeneration, and that reduced the distortion to a minimum, but the cataract job actually surprised me, as they almost had me convinced that it would not improve things.

Yes, that is often the problem with the NHS. It is like a curate’s egg – good in parts. If you get the right person then it can really pay off, but as in all professions there are different levels of ability and experience and it can be a lottery  what you actually get. I also suspect that oldies like us also get rather less attention and priority which is understandable but a bit of a personal downer.
