      Hi All,

As mention on an earlier thread, I’m going to build a TID tug for my recently acquired  steam plant I have had the PN Thomas General arrangement enlarged as I want some space for it to breath etc so at 120% looks about right, lets see how far I get before the sword descends on our forum !!

Please feel free to PM your mobile number to me if you would like to be included in an “Model Boats Forum Expats”TID 1 210325 WhatsApp group I intend to set up If the worst does come about 🙁

      Regards To all

        Hi Ray

Knot to big, not to small, just the right size !!!

        I will watch the built.

I just go back to another restoration !!!

An Aerokits Sea Rover which I have the plans as well of.

Will be a nice model with the steam plant. I take it the hull will be plank on frame?

            Hi Harry,

Sea Rover another favourite of mine I have the drawing so maybe a future build If I can fit it in 🙂

            Hi Chris,

Having taken David Marks advice I’m planning on using cheaper ply from Wikes for the bulkheads and 1/16th ply skins it’s all flat surfaces with a flat bottom, I’m just drafting the bulkheads and making templates which is the laborious task then I will crack on with the build 🙂

            Regards  Ray

              Hello Folks,

It’s probably me talking to myself ?? but no matter I will update the TID build/saga, It’s frustrating not having the number of views a thread receives shown anymore !!

We went on a pilgrimage to Maldon Essex on Friday to take photo’s of Brent one of the surviving TID’s which is of the 160 built during and after the war, fabricated in 8 sections and then taken to a temporary slipway welded together PDQ I imagine, she is rather battered ! but not bad for an 80 year old.Brent 1 Maldon 040425TID2TID3

The cheap Wickes ply (£11) was a pain to cut initially, but once I got into the swing it’s fine so now I have a flat packed tug, with the building board ready the good part will follow soon 🙂

              Regards  Ray

                Hi All,

Well to be honest I’m not enjoying this build yet 🙁 Having redrawn all the bulkheads from the enlarged drawing and cutting the bulkheads once on the board the gunwhale and chine’s are all over the place !! but as the originals were made in 8 seperate sections it may look ok like a thrupenny bit 🙂

Jim Pottinger does much better drawings than the one I have hereTID4TID5 !!

                Regards Ray

                  Hi Ray

Doubt the number of views would be that great anyway given the problems in accessing the site from Android devices unfortunately, especially as sites without problems are getting quieter. I keep wondering if it’s worthwhile updating my blogs anymore.

Progressing well even though you’re having problems. Easy enough to fix the misalignment of the chine I guess?

I suppose you could add intermediate stations Ray, but that would be a lot of work.  An alternative is to use slightly heavier covering to smooth out the transitions, which might be possible with relatively flat sides and a chine construction.

Either way there is no backing out now, you’ve got to get that steam plant into something!  I must admit, looking at the real picture, she has bags of attitude!  I’d be tempted to model the flattened nose as well!

What I find particularly interesting in your description is the fact that she was of a modular construction.  We tend to think of that as a modern technique with most ships nowadays being build in modules around the yard simultaneously and then quickly welded together in the dock.  As you say though the idea has been around since the war.

                      Hi Ray,

The TID was my first proper build . I follwed instructions from a magazine article which annoyingly I can’t find anywhere. I had to learn as I went along but it tuurned out quite well and sails nicely. I’ve just up graded the electrics, so it will be interesting to see how it performs now.

Will be watching your progress with interest,

                      Jim.

                        Hi All,

The TID is now progressing and I’m seeing the wood for the trees 🙂  I finally sorted out the bulkheads with some packing here and there, there is one which is wrong but it won’t notice the right way up, I doubled up the 1/8″ bulkheads with balsa strips to give a bigger gluing surface. I have plated the hull in 8 sections as per the fullsize which is the most economical way of covering the hull as there is very little waste, card templates being used for every section . I’m hoping the topsides will be straight forward now ! famous last words 🙂

Well the TID hull is complete structurally and the steam plant looks about right, this was the stage I wanted to reach before I go away for a weeks holiday in the sun, that’s why we have a heat wave here 🙂 mission accomplished !!

Steaming by the summer I hope

I was going to say it’s a pity they didn’t do a Fairey with a steam engine! But they did! Well not Fairey themselves but the owner of a Faun! No, I’m not going there!

At the 2013 Kirklees Steam Day this steam powered TID was brought along by a member of another club.  Sadly I’ve never seen it since but it was a superb build and worked beautifully.  I thought you might find the pictures interesting.

                                      Hi All,

I have made progress recently, with a coat of polyester resin inside the hull to keep out the wet stuff 🙂 the expensive parts of the build are now installed with the prop shaft and 4 bladed propeller, the rudder tube is a cut down 5mm stern tube with a new bronze bush turned on the lathe the brass skeg is pinned and glued onto the ply skeg and stops the rudder falling off, I have plenty of copper sheet so the blade is 1/8″ silver soldered to the stainless stock, so that is all the critical parts done, now I can crack on the the deck and superstructure 🙂

Another diversion has arrived in the shape of a part built 5″gauge Sweet Pea narrow gauge 0-4-2 saddle tank engine for me to finish off as a winter project,TID10TID11TID12 to run next year 🙂

                                      Regards Ray

Its got that typical TID shape Ray.  Were you planning on doing some steaming tests with an open hull?  Its a good opportunity to find and resolve all those little operational challenges while access is still easy before it all gets restricted by the decking.  Are you having a feed tank or just use the boiler then bring it out?

                                          Hi Richard,

That’s a jolly good idea 🙂 I think a little fresh water tank for the boiler feed, which can be used for ballast where and if needed,

I want to get the deck & bulwarks on before we put to sea , then it’s the superstructure, I have a lovely piece of 2″ diameter copper tube for the funnel, I hope it won’t be to heavy for stability ? we will see or I could roll a ply one I also want it to pivot to get under those low bridges 🙂

                                          Regards Ray

You’ve got plenty of space in that forward compartment for a feed tank.  Maybe make a polystyrene tank that simply drops into it.  Then arrange for some deck fitting to connect to it with a length of copper tube for filling.  I would also fit baffles inside the tank to minimise the sloshing around you would otherwise get, which affects stability.  (Known as free surface effect.)

What my tank looks like internally.

Just some ideas for you to think about.  For sea trials I did one with no decks just to be sure that everything actually worked.

                                              19-12-04-12WittonParkBenAin4

Then I did one with the deck fitted to be sure that everything could still be accessed.  You can see the copper flue had no undesirable effects on stability.  I made it with a dogleg so that the flue lined up with the model’s funnel as well as it gave me the opportunity to run the steam exhaust up the flue to keep things neat.

                                              16-01-05-17WittonParkBenAin51

I also made a cowl for the safety valve so that will also go up the flue if it lifts rather than pressurising the insides of the model and spraying steam and water everywhere.  I also lagged it to keep the heat away from the plastic funnel.

While I was away last time I thought my next yacht design for a plan would be the type used on the Norfolk Broads 🙂

                                                  Regards Ray

                                                    Hi All,

The TID saw the light of day at the Chantry MBC Tug Fleet Sailing day on Sunday, I’m sure seeing my work in progress will boost the sales of steam plants, as there were plenty of “P7I need one of those comments” 🙂

The engine room is now painted green for environmental reasons 🙂

                                                    Regards Ray

What environmental reason might that be Ray?  Just wondering of course, as you do.

As for promoting steam, everyone wants one until they see the price!
