The latest build .I’m finding this a bit more challenging as I’ve only got ships lines to work from so getting the frames worked out was a tad frustrating. I think  I’ve got it sorted ,it looks alright though. 20250128_09414020250128_094146

        Hello Mick,

Blimey !! where did that come from ?? fine work as usual I’d block and carve the stern  ??

Slight break from building here as we, Bernice and I are off to Cape Verde tomorrow for some sun 🙂

Sketch book packed and tape measure , who knows what I might find !!

All the best from a cold & breezy UK

        Regards Ray

Have great break with Bernice Cape Verde sound interesting.  I was going to do a complete building blog on this build but thought you have all had enough of my step by step blogs so I will just do infrequent updates on this build

I planked the hull on my Puffer, It gets a bit tight around the stern, but worth it in the end, I can understand blocking it though. That would probably be less hassle.

Going to watch the build with interest.

            Jim.

Planking is now complete so the next couple of weeks I will be sanding,  filling, sanding and fibreglassing . It’s a dusty job and I admit is not my favourite part of the build but time and care taken now will pay benefits later on .

Update on progress so far. I’ve finished the hull sanding ,fitted the coatings on the sides and front .I’ve also fitted and fibreglassed the propeller shaft in place. The trouble is that after about 10 am it gets too bloody hot in the workshop (35deg C) to do any work so it’s in the air-conditioned  house and doing some research,  namely watching utube clips of clyde puffers.

                            Hi Mick,

As someone who also planked the Puffer hull, that’s a very nice piece of work. Are you going to give the hull some sort of plating? On mine I’ve used card and a pounce wheel to represent the rivets.

Enjoying watching your progress. ( could do with some of your weather here, but we have to wait a while yet )

The model is of vic 32 and as far as I can gather was a welded hull built in 1942 as a  naval supply boat which is just as well as my sausage fingers and patience would be extremely challenged if I tried plating it 😀

Says he after planking a beautifully neat example of a hull!   A welded joint would be best represented by a raised seam but that would be a lot of work for something that is hardly noticeable. You could simulate some plate edging by simply scoring onto the surface but, as soon as the model is only a couple of feet away, plate detail would be indistinguishable so probably not worth the work.

Update . Three coats of grey primer and a light sand back between each coat and I’m happy with the hull. The basic  cargo hatch and sides have been been made ( lots of refining to do). The staunchings have been made and fitted although there not an exact replica of the real staunchings it’s a looks ok and is probably less prone to damage on the lake.

                                          Hi Mick,

A very nice hull. You are advancing in a different way to me with mine. I’ve been making the more fiddly bits at the rear end of the boat. It took me quite a while to get the wheelhouse windows how I wanted them, but worth it in the end. Once all the smaller bits have been made, it’s the handrails, then I can start moving forward.

                                          Jim.

Hi James the reason I am moving in this direction is that I’m building from a ship’s plan with no modeling detail included and to complicate matters further I’m upscaling everything by 20% ie;1/5th. My habit is to Make cardboard templates before before committing to plywood.  To illustrate the benefits of this process, yesterday I made up a cardboard box (mock up of wheelhouse structure) to see how it fitted on the hull . I must have been in zombie mode because instead of upscaling 20% I upscaled 15% it was obviously looking wrong.  So it saved me hours of work and subsequent expletives and waste of materials.  But getting back to your post I am looking forward to the more exciting part of the build namely all the more detailed bits ie: windows /door frames and fittings that take a inordinate amount of time to make but give the model authenticity and character.

Another aid I use in the build is I make up a rough model of a man in the scale of the ship and use that to judge if the item I’m building is right . I suppose that building to a model plan would save all that effort but it wouldn’t be half as much fun as doing it my way ( my better half always said “if there was a easy way or hard way I would always pick the hard way” and she’s probably right .)

We have just experienced a tropical cyclone hitting Brisbane and its caused quite a bit of damage to the environment and buildings south of the eye of the storm , fortunately for us we are on the northside of where the little bugger crossed the coast and apart from a few strong gusts of wind and some heavy rain about mid night we missed most of the drama

Getting back to more modeling subjects the puffer project is progressing on and I’m pretty happy with the build so far.  As most of you that have shown interest in my previous builds would know I’m not a fine scale modeler , I’m more into getting the feel of the full size subject rather than the exact copy, abit better than stand off scale but none  of them will win any show awards. My best friend (wife) once poetically put it the models capture the romantic picture of the subject rather than a photographic copy. That’s why she’s my best friend she says the nicest things

That’s the great beauty of this hobby, we can all build what we enjoy and have no-one to answer to.  I also think you do yourself a disservice, you models are very commendable scale models.  What I think is important is that we all look at something we have built and think about how we could have done it that bit better so we are continually learning.

I totally agree Richard with looking at what we have built and try to see how we could have done better. I see a notable improvement as my skill levels and understanding of techniques grow in each new model, ie; my first plank on frame hull I found quite challenging to do but each new build it became easier as I learnt more about the technique of steaming and plank positioning on the frames

Agree with you regarding the planking Mick, it does become easier the more you do it.

My Puffer is my third hull at planking, and I certainly found it easier than than the first one which was Surfury

The great thing about the Puffer is the amount of detail you can put on it.

                                                      Enjoy doing the fiddly bits.
