As I’m just about to start building again it reminded me that I could really do with something to clamp materials, mainly for cutting and sanding ply and timber and drilling etc. I’ve got by usually by just holding it by hand on my makeshift work bench or sometimes using my lightweight Workmate, but this is still over at my son’s whilst I finish off the odd jobs and I don’t have room for it in the house. I do have a full on Workmate as well but that is kept in the garage and used outside (no room in the garage to use it there so weather dependent) and is getting too heavy to lug around much.

So today I bought one of these and it’s on its way. Overpriced I know for what it is, but there’s not much on the market really. But what the heck! It will get more use than some things I’ve bought! I guess we’ve all done that!

Very neat, I like the idea of the pins in the top surface that can clamp flat objects.  I take it you screw this to a work top?

Oh dear, oh dear, what have you done?  I’ve just been looking at some of their workbenches on the Axminster website.  They are superb pieces of equipment and beautiful to boot.  But, as you say, not cheap!

Sorry Richard! Good job I haven’t got room!

Yes, there are options for holding it down, clamps (which I shall probably use), bolts or screws.

I have a Dremel Project Table which is like a mini Workmate but I don’t actually use it very often.

Looks to be just the job and if you only use it now and again it’s worth having. Pity they discontinued it and it didn’t come up when I did my initial search.

But, ahem, I found one on EBay and bought it!

                  Hi All & Chris,

This is the answer to how I hold stuff to cut it most, an old school Bench Hook, we had them at school to stop us cutting our fingers and usually workedBench hook 131124 🙂

This is a left handed one for the chosen few 🙂

                  Regards Ray

That’s a good idea Ray and simple to make.

I remember them from school.  You could also put the lower batten into the woodwork vice for additional security.

Thanks for the heads up Colin. It arrived yesterday and will be just the ticket for my needs. As luck would have it there was one on Ebay in the UK (others are all US) and whilst it was unboxed it is in as new condition.

I will use the other one when I need to hold larger pieces of timber but I can see the Dremel one getting the most use.

Whilst on the tool front I bought a replacement small PermaGrit block and a couple more razor saws with different teeth counts. Also bought some more aliphatic resin glue.

Christmas has come early! Partly justified by having a little job to do for my son but I’ll take any excuse!

Will do Tim. I’ve managed this long without them but I thought they may be useful for shaping the mahogany in my current build.

I’m a fan of Proxxon tools, I like their circular saw and thier drill press with a hand tool clamped in it.  Both really nice quality.

I did once break the clamp on the drill press that holds the power tool in place and was very surprised to be able to buy the spare part from them.

I was also able to buy a spare adjustable square for the saw so I have one set at 90 degrees and one set at 45 degrees so I don’t have to adjust it when I change angles.  Lazy I know but it takes a while to get the angle set absolutely perfectly.

Yes, I’ve got a number now but nothing particularly big. Biggest I’ve got is the small pillar drill. Wouldn’t mind a table saw but again I’ve managed without one and storage is getting to be an issue in what is the fourth bedroom. Not that it’s ever been one, used to have my parallel motion drawing board set up in there and now my workroom. It needs a revamp but I’m taking a break from that type of thing and anyway I want to carry on with building.

I was going to get a Proxxon scroll saw when I started but Neil said that Proxxon tools weren’t that good and I bought a much cheaper Record instead, well two in fact, and found them to be fine for my needs, good blades being the key. With model making tools you have to use them for that purpose and not abuse them I guess.

You mean like not using a vernier calliper as an adjustable spanner?

                                          Hi Richard,

That’s a thought, I will give it a try, They are cheaper in Lidl than a spanner , my first digital vernier was £85 thirty years ago 🙂

My Proxxon mains drill is the best tool I have as it has a pin chuck for the very smallest no. 80 twist drills

                                          Regards Ray
