Started build the John Goodyear RG65 Alpha from May 2018 Model Boats. I’ve read the three part article and plans, Can’t find anything that tells you thickness of deck. I was going to use 1.5mm thick ply. Also I assume the mast foot goes down into boat. How is it fixed at the foot ? Does it need some kind of wood block to keep it upright ?

Hiya D,

At the boat club this morning, I came across the free plan for Omega 🙂 also by John, she appears to be completely balsa constructed including the deck, the mast has 4 carbon tube’s for changing the mast location although I’d only both putting the third one in as recommended , as you will see the tube is for the base of the mast and has side support form bulkhead D, the forestay and backstay hold the mast in the boat 🙂 If you want a stock Dragon Force RG65 rig and sails look up RC Sailing at Swanley Mike Weston he stocks all the parts you will need and saves a lot of time with keels and bulb etc, I hope this helps.

Unfortunately John Goodyear was unable to join in as he couldn’t register with the forum! So, this is his reply to the OP here:

For the deck I recommend 3/32″ medium balsa. It has been proven over many models to be adequately robust when coated with epoxy-glass.

For the mast step, this is up to individual choice but on most of my models I use a three-position little unit as shown embedded in the guts of the model with some support below it and to the sides. It has proven very effective on the 13 JIF models constructed for club members to date.

I’m afraid I don’t know the details Colin, he just said he got a red error message telling him that he could not register.

Thanks for the replies guys. I thought a ply deck would be stronger, Think I’ve got copy of Omega plan somewhere. Ordered a full A rig set and sails to fit from a DG65 boat from RC Yachts, just makes it easier for a first boat model. Will post some progress photos.

The plans were free in Model Boats May 2018

They have all three parts of article plus the plans. Parts came from RC Yachts this morning, brilliant service.

Checking on the plans, the hull formers are not at 90 degrees to deck. They are set at 89 degrees which makes a difference to keel box angle. I’m going to do the same sort of setup for mast foot as on the Omega boat.

it was a very close thing

I checked this morning with about half an hour to go

some cheeky monkey out-bid me

so I upped my bid and kept watching

got notified I’d won so paid immediately to make sure

just waiting now, delivery some time next week
