Well in a moment of madness I bought a 1/16 scale tiger tank. Now I was just wondering if anyone knew if there was ever a german LC ever built. Reason being is that I really fancy storming a slip way and advancing with a tiger, to take on the ducks.

          Hi

Try looking up Marinefahrprahm (MFP) which was the largest German landing craft.

Thanks for the reply Paul. Will start the search now. Had a quick browse earlier but kept finding things called f boats, but did not look right.

The German forces had a few variants of landing craft but the largest heavy load carrier was the MFP, designated as a Naval Ferry Barge they were heavily armoured and could easily carry the Panther or Tiger tanks.

Paul. Like that… might have a go at making a carpet one to compliment the British (later) LCM we have. I have some 1/32 Airfix poly tanks to use…

Ashley (currently making a wooden land wasser snapper to compliment DUCK and Buffalo previously made)

When I was a lad, Calais was full of German landing craft

Mind you, I was only four at the time!

Ha! Ha!?….I remember the Home Guard in those far off days

They used to creep round the bushes in the park with blackened faces and frighten us all to death!

The park also had railway sleepers sunk in to deter aircraft landing

I didn't think that the Kaisers troops got as far as Calais.

Thanks for that Paul, Is my life going to made easy by a plan already being available for them or am I back to scratch building? My foche can go on hold for the moment. As I am in the mood to invade some ponds.

                              Hope that worked.

Right then, i have been roughly working out meassurements for this vessel. from using figures of wikipedia the thing is 50m in length and has a 7 foot beam, now with my calculator to 1/16th scale that makes it 312.5 cm long and only 43.75 cm wide. Now this seems to be rather out of proporsion in my mind, a canal boot comes to mind to be honest. Does this sound about right to anyone

                                  Hello Nevins

The true specifications of the Marinefährprahm from the Kriegsmarine archive:

                                  Length: 48m Beam: 6.5m Draught: 4.7m Draft: 1.5m (loaded) Displacement: 239t Capacity: 140t

Your dims are not far off (except the 7ft beam) and the proportions do resemble a canal boat or more precisely a Rhine barge.

I hope that this helps and I am looking forward to seeing this built at 1:16

                                  Paul

Paul, Funny, innit, you can spend ages searching and not find, and then in a weeks time…bop!! there it is in plain sight.

I have made the hull of mine (48×7) and have discovered now that the front of the barge has…not sure how to describe it… it looks like a catamaran, and the loading ramp fits in the gap. A barge with horns on the front. Mine of course is normal barge shape. so i will stick two strips on the front either side to simulate this.

There seems to be considerable variation in the build of these things, no two pictures are the same. Even on that link the picture, nmodel and plan do not agree! What I took to be windows in the top cover (sides) may be doors, I will hedge my bets and make extra long windows, to stick on the outside. I will also make an 88 to put on the back, as I like the look of them and recon I can make a reasonable copy of the ones we have. The inside will be plain as the tanks only JUST fit in the well, I made it a tight fit to keep the width down and get a flavour of the slimness of the things. Pics to follow.

It also looks like there were three props at the back which looks fantastic, however financial considerations means I am only fitting one 540 (of which I have a large pile)

Oo er..My barge is only 4 feet long, and carries 3x 1/32 scale tanks…a 1/16 scale one therefore I have realised would be 8 feet long (and still too small) and have just twigged the previous measurements of over 3m in length..that would be a monster and no mistake.

it would also require some seriouys stiffening to stop the hull from twisting.

Nev. Scratch build. Virtually all the photos I have seen show a large variation of design and fittings. The world is your oyster. You could always make the craft in two bits, as bolting them together woud be easy on such a regular shaped hull.
