        Hello forum members,

I am new to this forum because I would like to find a completed model of PS Waverley for my wife Claire as a Christmas present. Claire grew up on the west coast of Scotland in Largs and the Waverley featured throughout her childhood. We now live in North Norfolk but take trips on PS Waverley whenever possible.

I am looking for something approximately 3 feet long to sit on a window ledge overlooking the coast road in Cley-next-the-Sea where we live. We moved here last December after Claire suffered liver failure of unknown origin and had a successful liver transplant. If anyone can point me in the direction of someone with a beautifully built boat potentially for sale then i would be most grateful.

I have seen the models available from Vietnam but imagine there may be better quality build on this forum **LINK**

        Thank you for any advice,

        Matthew

Perhaps I should add that a length of any size would be interesting to me. Thank you, Matthew

Hi Matthew and welcome to the forum.

It may boil down to how much you want to pay.

A decently constructed boat, with lots of detail and likely in working order will be quite expensive, assuming you can find one. The constructor will have spent AGES making the boat, and also will have spent a fair amount of money doing so.

Having had a quick look at the link, you do seem to get quite a nice model, one which would look good on a shelf…other than I didn't see a price on it. Any idea how much they are?

Thank you for the prompt replies and photograph too.

Ashley, I believe they are about £275 plus postage from the USA. I also agree a lot of careful work will have gone into any detailed model, and fully expect to pay for this. I hope someone on this forum will contact me with a proposal.

They look quite nice models at a reasonable price. But do bear in mind that any model left on a window ledge is likely to deteriorate from the effect of UV rays over a period of time. The paint will fade and cracks may appear. Models should be displayed out of direct sunlight.

As far as this forum is concerned, not many people build models of Waverley and those that do will tend to keep them so it is not very likely that you will get any offers.

To be honest that's not such a bad price for quite a nice shelf ship, considering (but the postage is plus 50%!).

Having had a quick surf I cant see any Waverly kits, but a decent one would likely be twice that price and then there would be the cost/time for construction PLUS other materials and paints. It all adds up.

I suppose it depends on how good a model you want?

                      Ashley

Thank you Colin for the advice. Fortunately the window is north facing and in the shade at all times. I appreciate it is unlikely anyone will want to part with their carefully built Waverley, but I thought it worth asking just in case. Matthew

Hi Ashley and William, and everyone else. Mike did kindly contact me and in the end I decided to buy the one on EBay for £250, as it really seemed like quite a bargain. Let’s hope it is in good nick and I will let you know how my wife Claire reacts after Christmas Day! Best wishes, Matthew

you certainly have a penchant for living in beautiful parts of the UK, Matthew……we have been visiting Largs as a family on holidays for the past 20 years……..love the Clyde and love Largs…….great lovely and quiet for young children to feel safe in, and sailing regularly on Waverley and the calmac ferries gave my daughter to plan her life and career to involve the sea and ships………and what can I say about Cley…….another beautiful little village with an incredible windmill which I have been up several times………my brother in law used to be the Methodist Superintendent minister for the North Norfolk area..is the lively little Deli still open at the west end of the village.

I hope you enjoy and love your model, as I have always fancied building a Waverley to the same scale as my Jupiter [see the album on her] but just cannot find a grp hull big enough, sadly………anyway……….nice to meet [people who I can relate to……I also hope you love the NNCoast………and if you are interested in old lifeboats there is a chap just up the coast from Cley, who restores them and has two in the water down at Wells…..his base is at Stiffkey…….take a trip….he does some wonderful work. neil.

Yes Neil, Largs and Cley are both wonderful. My wife Claire grew up in Largs sailing dinghies and with her father in a clinker boat. We love to go back there and the west coast of Scotland.

We retired to Cley last year after Claire was quite ill but now mostly recovered. David Hewiit has shown us around Rescue Wooden Boats in Stiffkey (he has barns full of wooden former lifeboats) and his brother George built my wife’s Stiffkey Cockle dinghy which we sail and race from Morston Creek into the Blakeney pit and the seal colony. I have been visiting this area for 50 years starting with my father who was a wildlife artist, and for the past 30 years with Claire and my children.

After moving to Cley I joined the effort to reopen our Harbour which was once one of the largest in Europe. Here is some film of the biggest commercial boat to visit Cley in the last 60 years:

We also know that area of Norfolk pretty well, the family used to have a house in Wells-Next-The-Sea, where we had a speed boat that we used at Wells and Blakeney.

We've been back a few times, the last time being in September for my wife's birthday, with us stopping just outside Hunstanton. We drove along the coast road visiting all the places that we used to and had lunch at the Dun Cow, Salthouse, like we'd done previously.
