I would like to obtain/purchase some Graupner 2340 Jet Drives – Qty. 2 either as a pair or single items from two individual sellers.

Ever heard of rocking horse dung or hen's teeth? Both are more common than Graupner products these days.

Dave – Many thanks for your response. I had seen these units before but via an American web-site. The main difference between the KMB and the Graupner type is the size. The KMB having a 28mm impeller and the Graupner having one of 40 mm dia. I can only assume that the KMB is therefore less powerful, although both manufacturers have designed their unit to operate via a 700 motor. I fancy having a go at a model Stalwart i.e. the same as the one featured in MB about 4 years ago. I have all the mechanical components but have been searching for the Graupner jet motors for about 2 years. The reason for the request on the MB Forum was that 2 Graupner units were on eBay about 2 weeks ago, but I missed out.

Dave – Just to let you know that I have procured 2 off Graupner 2340 units. The items referenced in my last post reappeared on eBay and this time my bid was successful. The seller advised that someone has butchered two of the components and I think this is why they reappeared. i.e. the original purchaser rejected the items. However, I can easily machine some `adaptors' to resurrect the butchered items. Thanks for your advice re. the KMB items.

There are times when I regret not keeping up with what I learned about using machine tools when I was an Undergraduate Apprentice with BAC – which preceded my 'shy and callow' period…. I still look wistfully at adverts for lathes and mills but I've got so used to making small scale bits and pieces in other ways that I couldn't really justify the expense of one these days. 'Real' model engineering (e.g. locomotives and steam engines) has never really got my juices flowing!

I'd be interested to see how you get on with these jet drives, but did the Stolly really have waterjet drives?

I think there are two main types of modeller. Those of an engineering bent and those who favour the artistic approach. The former will remake a component or item until they get it just right, The latter will just make it once then fiddle with it or bodge it ntil it looks right and performs adequately. I have always been in the latter camp. After all, if you are an artist, you can always cover up your mistakes with more paint but an engineer has to get it excactly right!

Hi Dave

It surprising what can be turned using a decent pillar drill, I've turned many basic pieces such as stanchions, bollards and domes etc with my B&Q pillar drill.

The Stolly had 2 vectored water jet drives which were very efficient but very high maintenance.

Dave – I will keep you updated re- the Stolly but at the moment it is about 5th in line. of models to make. I have been acquiring the mechanical bits and pieces from eBay etc, as and when available and at the right price. The jet drive mechanism that Paul mentioned is shown within Bob Hinton's article on the construction of his Stolly in the July 2011 edition of MB. Regarding Colin's comment, yes I am definitely in the `engineering' category, going to great pains to get things correct. Currently constructing a small batch of wooden pallets (for use as deck clutter) in 1/16 scale. This involves making a small fixture to get the plank spacing correct. The wife thinks I am mad.

When I started as a humble craft apprentice with the Ministry of Aviation back in 1965. We had within the intake, two Student Apprentices that went on to university. I later got involved in training, including running the mechanical side of a Student Engineer Training Centre for MOD where we had students in both pre university and past university modes…..very happy days
