Robin Buckland has alerted me to an advertisement in Military Modelling Magazine concerning a sale by PPI Auctions of warship models being disposed of by QinetiQ Ltd (UK). You can see the details here:

I am not sure what these models were originally built for and they do not appear to be working ones but quite interesting all the same and worth a look.

The prices look pathetic for such (apparently) nice models, even if they are statics.

The information provided if you click on the QinetiQ link says they are made of soldered copper for "signature data collection". I wonder if that is radar cross section measurements as they are all waterline models. The weights given suggest quite a lot of valuable copper so perhaps these are likely to appeal to scrap merchants?

There is now an advert on the website in the right hand column.

Francis, you could well be right. The models look to be of rather limited interest to modellers.

                  I can't see where they are !

Ashley, I'm sure you could get them working.

Not sure about that. if they are copper, the tophamper will be enormous and no amount of additional underwater bouyancy will get them stable..or even float! Shame. Also the transport issue.. a 3m model will not fi in the Ignis.

if only I had the room, they are spiffing models for the silly money.

The ships will probably be brass not copper, they build all the ships in brass and then run tests on them for radar signatures, magnetic interference all those kind of things.

They still make them to this day if you look here

You can see some of the brass ships being built for testing

I worked at QinetiQ for 12 years – at a different site – built a few commissions for them as well (aircraft and AFV's). A lot of stuff was made by workshop apprentices in the early days, probably pre-QinetiQ (DRA/RSRE) – exceptional quality a lot of it was.
