I have put up an album Here showing progress on my Fishery Protection Cruiser Brenda to date.

        Some details:
        Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency Cruiser

        BRENDA

Built 1951 by Denny of Dumbarton

        Displacement 457 tons

Length: 189 feet   Beam: 26 feet    Draught: 11 feet

2 British Polar Diesels. Max speed 16 knots. Cruising speed 12 knots

The model is 1/48th scale and is powered by two 380 type motors operating off an 8 volt supply from 4 Cyclon lead acid batteries.

The radio control is arranged so that the toggle switch on the transmitter intended for undercarriage control in the model aircraft version serves to allow either independent motor control or grouping both motors under the left hand stick.

Hull construction is balsa planking on ply frames with gummed paper strip covering.

The hull and running gear are now virtually complete and it remains to finish the superstructure and fittings. It is intended to fit full interior, exterior and navigation lighting.

The colour scheme of the original vessel changed on a number of occasions and I have chosen to depict the ship as originally built.

                Jim,

Any photos would be very useful indeed as I didn’t actually get around to completing the model as planned and have quite a lot of detail still to do. It would seem that the vessel underwent quite a few changes during her career.

What is the best way of getting hold of your photos?

                Many thanks,

                        Hi Colin,

Looks a fantastic build, hope it’s going well.  My grandfather also built a model of the Brenda but lost interest after building the structure and starting to fit her out.  He ultimately gave her to me and I am hoping to complete the model but have no experience in model ship building.  I wondered if you might be able to give me any advice on obtaining or making the fittings, please?  Even suggestions of materials and tools I will need would give me a start!

There was a box of bits that came with the model and I am fairly certain that there are some photographs of the ship amongst them, which I assume that my grandfather took as he was living in Helensburgh and then Glasgow when building the model.  If I can find them then I will scan them and could forward if they are of interest,

                        Regards,

                        Mark

                          Hi Mark,

Thanks for the interesting post. I’m afraid my model has not progressed much recently due to other priorities.

If you have no previous experience in modelling then it’s a bit of a tall order to give you practical advice, except to suggest that you consider getting hold of a book or two on boat modelling and having a read up on the subject. Then you can decide whether you feel able to tackle the job.

Because Brenda was built so long ago there are very few off the peg fittings on the market which would be suitable so you, like me will be faced with making your own! I assume that your model is to 1:48th scale and that you are using the MAP plans.

There is to be a Special Issue of Model Boats published in May which will include a number of articles on basic boat modelling techniques including obtaining and constructing fittings. If you are not in too much of a rush then you could consider waiting for this.

I would certainly be interested in any photos of the ship you may have as information is quite hard to come by. I am sending you a PM with my email address.

                          Regards,

                            Hi Colin,

I too am keen to see the finished result as, a long time ago, I was fortunate enough to see the “real” Brenda in action.
I can also supply a couple of images which might help with the colour, as I recall the Grey was distinctly “greenish”, as are the present day Fisheries Cruisers.
She was a lovely ship ( and might still be! ) and your model is well on the way to bringing her back to life.

                            Regards,

Hi Will, I have sent you a PM.

I had some correspondence with a former captain of Brenda and it seems that the colour scheme was changed on a number of occasions during her career. As you say, the grey at one point had a distinctly greenish  tint and this was combined with a black hull!

I have gone for a generally mid grey hull on my model although it is still on the back burner at the moment. Must do better!

                              Colin

                                Hi Colin,

Thanks for the advice and tip-off regarding May’s Model Boats, I will be sure of getting a copy, and to look for some books, too.  Our model is 1/48th scale and from the MAP plans, the same as yours.

The PM from you didn’t get through, so I’ve created an album here http://www.modelboats.co.uk/albums/member_album.asp?a=14062 with the photographs that my grandfather took of Brenda.  I also found the May 1977 issue of Model Boats, which included an article on Brenda and included some more detail pictures, so have uploaded this, too, in case you haven’t already got them.  Finally, I have added some photos of my grandfather’s model (I can only take credit for the paint and such fittings as are on the main deck, he built the rest while living in a caravan for his last year before retirement in 1980.)

The colour scheme that I’ve gone for is the black hull and bluey-greeny upper, this is described in the Model Boats article and one of the magazine photos shows the Brenda in this livery.  If there are colour photographs available of her in this scheme then I would be very interested to see them.

                                Regards,
