This year's Winter Special is now almost upon us!

Packed with interesting and useful articles it is not to be missed as we leave the boating season behind and turn our thoughts towards winter projects.

Among the many items in this 100 page issue are an I/C Racing Boat build, a Fast Runabout Feature Plan, review of the Steam Tug Cruiser kit from Mountfleet Models, a semi scale Hovercraft and advice on purchasing a steam plant.

Check out the website home page to see the full cover and contents.

          Hello Colin,

Please pardon a rather stupid question, but I seem to keep forgetting: is this issue included in one's subscription, or does one have to order it separately/pick up it from a newsagent's?

          /Mattias

This one is included in your subscription so you won't have to go looking for it!

Will now attempt to make some models for future projects

                Thanks winkMichael

Glad to hear you all liked it but it was a regular issue edited by Paul Freshney, not me! Paul does put a lot of effort into getting the right mix for the 'bonus' 13th issue which comes out in November as the Winter Special.

Very good edition, this one. I was particularly amused by GG's page on Internet Forums and Reading the Instructions.

For the uneducated, the former is where you go if you can't be bothered to find anything out for yourself, and the latter is the bit of the packaging which you throw away first.

I had an E-Mail today from a can't-be-named-here modelling personality who said "You and I are probably quite alike in our outlook on life". It wasn't, but it could equally have been Glyn!

That's a bit hard Dave. Forums can be an excellent source of advice but it is certainly true that people will be more inclined to help you if you have already made an effort to find out what you want and of course doing so usually allows you to frame your questions in a way that makes it easier to give specific answers.

All forums do include a search facility and a bit of time spent with this plus some general browsing will soon answer the perennial questions such as paint compatibility, the difference between amps and volts and whether to stuff grease up your stern tube(!)

Regular members will of course know that Dave is second to none in actually answering questions but he does prefer it if the supplicant has done a bit of basic research first!

Quite agree with the manuals though, as they say, 'when all else fails – read the instructions'.

I'm merely paraphrasing Glyn's comments, Admiral. No need to have me keelhauled, sir!

I'm generally only too pleased to assist but there are a few individuals who one feels could have done a bit more basic research. Read what The Man says – it's nothing especially controversial and is perhaps a little more delicately phrased than my earlier post. I guess my flippancy is fuelled at the moment by the prospect of standing my very last model boat show this weekend. If I get asked one more time about retiring I can now say "Yep – it's on Sunday!"

I too enjoyed this issue of the magazine very much indeed. The one point I wish to make regarding the comments raised by Glyn Guest in the MB magazine and Dave Milbourn within the MB forum, is that it is important to be able to trust the source of the information provided and also that there is normally more than one way of skinning a cat….sorry cat lovers. Dave has helped me a great deal and I have also followed Glyn's advise on certain matters. My background is machine tool work and associated processes e.g. welding. However, reading some of the articles in one of MBs sister magazines re. turning milling etc., often the information given is not only incorrect, but sometimes verging on the dangerous. Although I am not a steam fan, I do enjoy reading Richard Simpson's articles, in MB, particularly those that have included machine shop processes e.g. the recent one on `tapping'. Spot on Mr Simpson….clear, concise and unambiguous, as it should be.
