The 2015 Special issue of Model Boats is now available to pre order:

      **LINK**

2015 marks the 65th anniversary of the original publication of Model Maker, the predecessor to Model Boats.

To celebrate the occasion, in this Special Issue we are bringing together a collection of features and articles which reflect today’s mainstream model boating interests but also draw upon the rich archival material from the past.

A keynote item is Tony Hadley’s biography of legendary editor and designer Vic Smeed together with his painstakingly compiled list of all Vic’s model boating designs that are presently known. This is a unique project which will be of great interest to boat modellers everywhere, many of whom will have started their hobby with a Vic Smeed design. Tony’s article is complemented with a delightful build by Dave Milbourn of Vic’s Twinkler cabin cruiser developed from Vic’s original plan (reproduced in this issue) and which makes a perfect project for the youngster or beginner alike.

We also have a free full size plan of a Scottish vehicle ferry together with a general round up of ferry types as seen at Portsmouth. Naval enthusiasts will enjoy the feature on RN small monitors of WW1 which combines a progress report on the restoration of historic monitor M33 together with a plan feature for HMS M15 specially written by current Model Boats Editor Paul Freshney.

This issue will be available from selected branches of W H Smith in the UK from 24th April. I understand that it will also be marketed in digital format (but without the free plan!)

            Thanks Mike,

I like to think it is a good mix between ancient and modern!

I enjoyed putting it together and we have some excellent contributors.

              Hello Colin,

Just for the sake of clarity, am I right to think that this issue is not included in the regular subscription?

                Hello Mattias,

You are correct, this Special issue is not included in the regular subscription and will need to be ordered separately. It is produced under a special contract with the newsagent W H Smith in the UK but MyTimeMedia also sell it directly as not everyone has access to a W H Smith store. It is intended as a general promotion of Model Boating alongside the regular issues of the magazine and contains entirely separate material.

As with most of the recent Special issues (except 2014) it has been edited by myself.

There will be an Autumn special edition of the magazine included in the subscription in the usual way.

                Colin

Hi Colin. This will certainly make it into my collection. Can't say I will pay nearly two quid for delivery from the hobby store, but will pop down the high street when it is released. Cheers, and keep them coming, Andy.

                    Hi Andy,

Yes, pick it up from your local store if you can, saves on postage! Those who can't will just have to bite the bullet but it is cheaper than last year's Special so maybe not too expensive I hope. I am really pleased with the articles submitted by my contributors including Tony Hadley, Dave Milbourn, Ashley Needham and Richard Simpson who are all members of the Forum plus of course Paul Freshney who has rewritten his Monitor M15 article especially for the issue.

We have also had great support from Vic Smeed's family in providing biographical details and photos and Portsmouth Dockyard and the National Museum of the Royal Navy have supplied some unique photos of Monitor M33 so I think it is fair to say we have made the Special issue just that little bit special!

The Barge Yacht article from the 1960s offers an opportunity to build a simple but really appealing scale sail model too – I'm quite tempted myself!

                    Colin

                      HI Colin

Is the special only available in WHSmiths or do they send it out to newsagents???

                        Mark,

I am not exactly sure what the W H Smith distribution arrangements are. On previous occasions they have allocated the issue in batches of 5 or 10 to those outlets (usually their larger branches) where they reckon it will be most likely to sell. I know that some issues have ended up in local newsagents but I suspect it is rather hit and miss.

However as it is a one off issue and classified as a 'Bookazine' it may be that your local newsagent will be able to order a copy from WHS on request.

Hi Colin Its great to see and honour Vic Smeed and his huge contribution to model boating in this new Model Boats Special . Well done Colin . I look forward to a good read. It will bring back memories of a by gone age which I was part of.

                            Hi all,

Well, I am pleased to say that my addition of the Magazine came through the post today and it is, up to now, a very enjoyable read. Well done Mr Bishop, the articles are well put together. of course also Mr Milbourn we will make a modeller out of you yet! wink

May I ask you and the rest of the editors of the Model Boats never to allow the magazine to go fully digital – because when one is holding a magazine it is personal and obviously can be read anywhere without annoying anyone, even in the middle of the night – by torchlight (got no electricity in the North East of England you know

                            aye

Glad you like it so far John, I haven't seen it myself yet, just the pdf proofs – hopefully I will get the Editor copies tomorrow.

I think this one is being offered in digital format as well which is handy for people living outside the UK with high postage costs but I agree you can't beat a hard copy really.

Update! My copies have just been delivered and the issue does look like I hoped it would. It's always a bit of a trade off between number of images and their size but ultimately the amount of editorial page space is limited so hopefully we have got the balance right.

I have tried to deliver a good mix of material and I hope we have done that to appeal to as many boat modellers as possible. These Special issues do provide an opportunity to feature material that might not make it into the regular magazine which I hope readers will appreciate.

Not at all, although you know yourself that it would be difficult to make a living from the occasional article for MB! What I do earn goes straight back into the hobby fund.

I'm not quite in the same league as Peter Russell, who ran the model shops in Lincoln and Worksop and wrote a regular column in RCM&E in the 70's. When I asked him more or less the same question he said "I'm not in business to make friends, you know." Bless.

DM. As you say, we dont make a living from it. The money does just about pay for the boat in question which is nice.

I am not that bothered particularly about the money, I like to see me name in print !

I have other articles and so on elsewhere and they do not pay at all, being specialist or collectors type publications, but of course thats why we do it for the fun!

Having articles published is somewhat shaping my modelling , in that Colin and Paul must have more than enough builds of superb quality to feature, and i dont work to such a standard…time and so on, so I fulfill the "niche" spot. Oddly enough, the more you look, the more there are unusual items to make. Tthis is what I find most interesting…the challenge of making something work, and the wow factor.
