2010 marks the 60th anniversary of Model Maker/Model Boats magazine and to mark the occasion MyHobbyStore are preparing a special Commemorative issue.

This will feature material taken from six decades of publication plus specially commissioned articles which highlight the  progress made in Model Boating from 1950 until the present.

This special edition will only be available from W.H.Smith or by direct order from MyHobbyStore and publication date will be mid May 2010.

I have been given the privilege of editing this unique edition which reflects the rich diversity of model boating over the last 60 years. I hope it will give you as much pleasure in reading as it has me in putting it all together.

This sounds great Colin, it will be good to see some of the mateial from previous editions back to the fore again. There is much from past years that will still be of use today and would otherwise be forgotten. I look forward to obtaining a copy.
I would think the editing will be quite difficult, particularly in deciding what to leave out!
          Rick.

You couldn’t be more right Rick. It has involved trawling through 700+ issues (I knew they’d come in handy someday!) and picking out a couple of representative articles from each decade has been very, very difficult as there is so much to draw on. I have generally tried to choose items which are still of relevance today and capture people’s imagination whilst still covering most of the main areas of the hobby.

Rather than just copying the old articles, which would have been the easy option, I have rescanned the illustrations (photos and plans etc.) and used OCR on the text to enable the designer to present this old material in modern format. The OCR has also enabled me to do a bit of  minor editing such as adding the approximate Metric equivalents to the old Imperial measurements. These days, 2.3mm gives a better mental image than 3/32nds of an inch to many people although the old values will still be there too. So yes, it has been a lot of work!

My research may bear further fruit as, if the Commemorative issue is successful, there may be scope for a future “Best of Model Boats” edition concentrating on plan features and kit reviews but that is still to be confirmed.

              I second that Rick.
Both publications will be very welcome in my view Colin. I am sure the extra work involved will be much appreciated.

                A further thought Colin,
How about a collection of backnumber articles on ‘technical’ matters?
What do I mean? Well the article you sent me on scale speed calculations set me thinking. Such articles as that one should be well worth bringing to a modern readership.
                Other possible inclusions:-
                Calculation of displacement (Simpson’s rule).
Basic electrical articles by such authors as Gylnn Guest.
                Lists of material density etc.
Definitons of terms such as ‘metacentric height’ etc.
These would be very useful in one volume.
Otherwise if not a booklet how about an online album available to all subscribers, which would probably be easier to update.
                Rick.

Certainly a thought Rick – in fact the Warring article on scaling is included in the Commemorative Special plus another one on a wonder modelling material which was used in 1950 and is still available today…. The problem is that you have to find a balance and formula which will generate sufficient sales to justify the cost of production. Also a lot of the technical articles were ‘of their time’ and would not be seen as very relevant to today’s boaters who are frequently inclined to buy ATR models etc.

MHS is a business and has to generate a return on expenditure so that does obviously influence what can and cannot be done. In essence I have effectively donated a lot of my timne to the Commemorative Special as it is an interesting project and asociated with my hobby. I can afford to do this as I am retired.

However, hosting some material on the Website is certainly a possibility althopugh it will have to wait until I’ve cleared my current backlog!

I really look forward to the commemorative issue.  I’ve been a reader and collector of Model Maker/Model Boats for over 45 years and hope there might be representative samples of the work of Michael Ainsworth (Fighting Fleets), R.A. Sweet (Marine Miniatures), and/or R. Carpenter (Simplified Merchantmen).  It was these and other contributors who hooked me into ship modelling with their detailed drawings and accompanying text.  I still use the Norman Ough series for reference on detail.

I must say that the magazine has evolved in format and content over the years and remains an excellent source, but I miss that type of article.

                    Cheers

I would like to send in a cheque to purchase a copy of the Model Boats Commemorative Special issue.
How much is it including P&P?
To whom do I send it?

Just a reminder that the Commemorative Special issue will be on sale in W.H.Smith  tomorrow, Thursday 13th May.

Those people who have pre ordered have already been sent their copies and it has been well received.

Details of the contents can be seen by clicking on the image on the Website home page.

This is a limited print run so if you want a copy don’t delay, when it’s gone it’s gone! You’ll have to wait 60 years for the next one.

For those of you queueing at W.H.Smith…..

Apparently there has been a glitch with the distribution. The latest info I have is that some WHS branches now have copies and that the main distribution will take place today so that the issue should be generally available tomorrow (Saturday 15th).

However not every WHS Branch will be stocking them – presumably not the smallest ones – in which case you will need to order direct from MyHobbyStore. They have them available to send out so there should be no delay but you will have to pay postage. http://www.myhobbystore.co.uk/product/24897/model-boats-commemorative-special-1950-2010-pre-order

The delay does not appear to be the fault of MyHobbyStore – a bit frustrating though!

So, just how many have they printed?40, 50?, been to whs and had to show staff a picture of it from MB mag, I am not going to be held to ransom by myhobbystore, if its in the shop I will buy it, if not then I will not.

Len, and im on the front cover, doesnt that get me a FREE copy?

I believe that at least 5,000 have been sent to WHS. As I said, the distribution problem is not down to MyHobbyStore. It is a special arrangement with WHS and they decide which branches will stock it. Hopefully yours will. If not, and you want to buy it then you will have to order it direct from MHS.

It isn’t about holding people to ransom but business economics I’m afraid! WHS drive a hard bargain I believe!

I had to send copies out to my contributors, the postage was around £1.20 and  the envelope cost me another 60p or so with no allowance for the cost of my time. A postage and package cost from MHS of £1.78 is not too extortionate in the circumstances.

You would think if they had negotiated an exclusivity deal they would want it out on the selfs as soon as possible..!!  Bet if it had been a plane or train mag it would be out now..

Latest info this morning (Monday) is that there have indeed been distribution delays, apparently on the part of W H Smith. MyHobbyStore are trying to clarify the situation and I will post further information as soon as I receive it.

WH Smith stores due to receive the issue are as below. Each will have either 10 or 5 copies.

                                        Hi Colin,

I have just bought my Commemorative Issue and really  enjoyed my initial perusal over a cup of tea in the garden- may I congratulate you on a job well done?

I recall reading that a ‘Best of Model Boats’  might be a possibility and I think that might be popular as, unfortunately I think the model boating fraternity is an aging one! I certainly think that some folk would like to see the original articles that accompanied some of the plans range, especially from the fifties and sixties- or is this a possibility now?

Thanks again for your efforts on this production.

Thank you Ian, glad you are enjoying it.

The tentative thinking around a second issue is that it might combine some classic material associated with plans, as you suggest, together with what might be termed Model Boating Basics which would comprise short articles on the fundamentals of model boating such as use of materials, painting, adhesives, fitting out etc. These are subjects which come up again and again on the Forum and it might be nice to bring them together with some practical application projects. Still some more thinking to be done and the whole thing will be constrained by budgetary considerations of course!

One problem with reproducing plans and associated articlles is that in many cases the article bit frequently comprised several instalments. For example Dave Metcalf’s Bluebird of Chelsea was a ten part series which would make it impractical for a one off issue. But I’m sure we can find something though!

I thought that the Commemorative Issue was excellent, both in content, and value for money. I look forward to a possible follow up.

I remember making the J.Weeks designed  vane gear on pages 14 & 15. The vane gear was fitted to Marblehead yacht and performed exceptionally well. Where ever did I find the energy to run after a free sailing yacht sailing on a large lake, and where did I find room to store a Marblehead?

Once again  Colin  thanks for producing what is an excellent magazine, perhaps we may see  more of these types of specials in the near future.
