hi all and powers that be

i don’t know if this has been done in the past but how about doing build competitions say once a year.

you could set like a price limit on how much you are allowed to spend and possibly a time limit as well .you could have different catagories of boats open to the novice and expert builder a like.

then they could be posted on the web site for members to vote on the best and the winners get a prize and possibley published in the mag?

i think this would get the whole communitty bussing and talking with each other more .

what do you think

I think a photographic competition would be a better option. Might get me out more! Results could be printed in the magazine.

you could be write, but there are many ways this could be done you could even have say a comp for the best boat made from recycled material for instance or you could say that a certain item had to be used to make the model like a milk carton for instance.

be good for laugh and get the old brain matter working harder.

I like the idea of some kind of competition, we already have a gallery section so a photo competition would be very easy to set up as all you would need is a judge.

Making boats out of milk cartons has been done before with limited success as Len will confirm.

How about designing a boat…the competition could have different classes such as warship, sail, speed, cargo, tug, sub. and the winning design could be published along with a photo editorial detailing a stage by stage build.

great idea like a say there is so many ways this could be done with very little cost to the mag and i think that they could offer a years subscribtion as a prize or even plans ect… of the winners choice from hobbystore.

also you could cater for the younger modelers out there with maybe a kit as a prize.

i think for the judge it could be down to the members to say vote on line to get them down to the last three then publish them in the mag and the editor pics the winner or vise versa .

Hi Ron

I’m glad that you like the idea now all that you have to do is convince the rest of the members and above all our web master, I would give you his name but I can’t quite recall it, I shall have to look a long way back through the postings to try and remember who he is!!

Whilst I try and discover who and where our web master is perhaps you could sketch out some basic rules and conditions.

i just think this could do a lot for this mag and the web site make it bigger and better after all its here for us , so its down to us members to make it what it deserves to be.

so come on members if you like the idea post your comments on here and let the powers that be know it.

Excellent idea, but does it have to be a non original plan design ie; something you invent design wise or can it just be anything that floats and works?

Perhaps Rons competition could be split into 2 distinct sections, one of original design and one of variations to existing designs before being sub divided into different classes of warship, cargo, sail etc

What do you think Ron?

not a bad idea but myself if going to do a design compo i would aim more for something not done before but not all of us have engineering background and come can up with these ideas so yes there should be sections to cater for this and for the new and next generation of builder either from scratch build or kit and from static to r/c,a competition open to all areas of all generations.

Hi Ron

I agree that not all of us have engineering or technical backgrounds nor do we all have access to computer design programmes and that having these things would give some members an unfair advantage in a pure new design competition.

So it looks like you have come up with the perfect competition and the various categories that people can enter so all that you need to do is formalise the conditions and rules.

Its a little disappointing that some other members haven’t registered their thoughts on this subject as I am sure that likes of Bob, Ashley, Ken and Len would have something to say on the matter.

Over to you again Ron to come up with the draft outline of terms & conditions and then let’s see if we can make this idea fly.

Good Morning Ron

I shall start the ball rolling with a plan view of a small barrel back speedboat that I am drawing up plans for to build next spring.

The boat will be 1m long and built out of 6mm ply frames with a mahogany veneer over a 2mm ply skin. Powered by a 600 size motor and operating on a 2 channel system.

When completed it will have 8 coats of spray lacquer to give a deep shine.

will draw up the idea and terms / conditions over the weekend due to work commitments and will email them to you to go over so we can iron out any little problems before posted on site.(plus this will give the weekenders time to catch up on whats been happening and hopefully join in on the discussion) like the plan you have drawn up would be nice to see on the water when finished.have a few ideas of my own but nothing on paper as yet .

Hi Guys,

Everyone thinks its a good idea until its time to start putting their hand in the pocket and start making said boat,and you start off with a rubber band motor and then someone goes and puts a Brushless one in theirs!.

Whats wrong with all making one of Ashleys designs,either the float plane or hovercraft ?.

What more experienced modelers with a shed full of motors/servos/Esc’s/batterys/glues/timber/etc forget is the cost of starting out into modeling ( No more about Twiggy ).

I am not having a rant just a few observations to chuck in the pot.

That was why I suggested a photographic competition. Sections could be for full sized craft, junior members + others. If it was kept to the online section, more readers might consider subscribing.

It is ok to have ideas but when it comes to ‘put your hands in your pockets’ things don’t seem to happen. Whereas I think the majority of us have camera.

Having a design competition doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to build the model all the competitors will have to do is submit a design, either an original or an addition / alteration to an existing design.

This way people don’t have to expend huge ammounts of cash just spend time doing some drawings.

So what do you think now Len?

- Paul. Last suggestion is a good idea. I am full of ideas, workable or not! However, I am computer ilitarite when it comes to cadding or turbo cadding or wotnot. Would scanned copies of drawings be ok, and how much detail would/might be expected. A further stage might be to submit pictures of your design as realised by a (for instance) card model..nothing fancy, just to give the drawings substance. Corrugated card/hot glue/scissors, that sort of thing. As a "designer" of oddities, I find its easy to get your picture and make a theoretical drawing of what might be a working model (as I suppose that would be one of the criteria, the design would have to be able to be practically realised) but its another thing when you start to work on access, replacement of engines/parts, placement of batteries etc for balance , ? or wot. Not many people are skilled in CAD drawing and to be honest I wouldn’t expect many entries on CAD I assumed that most entries would traditionally hand drawn. So scanned copies of hand drawn designs would be very acceptable and if supported with photos of the model being constructed then so much the better.

the designs can be as detailed or as basic as you like but obviously a higher level of detail would impress our esteemed judge and thinking of practicalities like replacing parts and batteries can only stand in your favour.

So what do you think would you take part in such an enterprise?

hi all

it seems that some have got the wrong idea about my idea basicly it is simply a design comp were members submit there drawings and description about the plans on the site were members can vote for there favourite to wittle them down to the last three then the judge then can pick the winner.if the members wants to build there model they can and include photos if they wish.no cost to the members so all members can take part regardless of how many moths in there wallet/purse and if the powers that be agree i think a 1yr subscribtion to mag or winning plan published in the mag would be a good prize for all

Another idea for a comp is what about a Cartoon competition there are lots of wicked people on the forum with wicked sense of humour.
