What is this engine?

I was given this set of bronze castings about 15 years ago and at the time, the drawing was not available for some reason?

Does anybody out there recognise the engine?……It was purchased from A J Reeves, I am told, but the donator can`t remember the name.

Hi Bob

They look very much like the Marcher or Borderer castings. probably Marcher as I think the Borderer has a plain flat baseplate. Both are very similar just that the Borderer is slightly bigger. Both sets of plans are available from the Myhobbystore shop (See this site). Both were designed by P J Bertinat. Border was serialised in the Model Engineer volumes 163-165 and Marcher in volumes 166-167. Note that if you look at the Marcher details on the myhobbystore site it says it is 7/8" bore – it is not – it is 7/16" x 7/16" stroke. Border is slightly bigger something like 9/16" x 9/16". I've got a half built Marcher but know it makes into a very useful model boat engine.

Reevs still supply castings for both engines.

Hope it might help. Worth looking at these two anyway.

I need to be sure which engine it is, before purchasing the correct plans

Can you tell if all the castings are there?

Any finished pictures anywhere?

Looks almost complete but there might be a pair of eccentrics missing. All the castings are now available seperately https://vault1.secured-url.com/reeves2000/shop_item.asp?sub_cat_id=174 There are a few videos on Youtube just search for Marcher steam engine.

You might just have fired me up ,no pun intended, to dig it out and finish it.

Might even see you at the March Modellers at ellesmere Port this weekend.

I hope you will appear and introduce yourself?

Don't know yet, if it'll be Sat or Sun, but will advise shortly

Hello Les

It was nice having a chat with you today at the Colwyn Bay show

The lovely weather we had was a nice change and the show was well attended

With ref to the engine castings, we shall be visiting Bennllech shortly, so it may be a good idea to leave the castings at Holyhead Museum for pickup at your convenience?
