Hi all, I'm about 3/4 of the way through building a model of the Bardic ferry, and have a problem with the crane. My plans aren't clear about how its arranged and although I've made plenty of ships and boats I'm a bit stumped by this. The problem is that I don't even know what to Google to get some decent pictures or drawings,so if anyone can help or even direct me toward some pictures etc it will be a huge help.

        Chas.

          Chas,

I made a model of Bardic Ferry back in the 70s.

I assume you are using the Vic Smeed plans and I agree that the fine detail of the crane mounting isn't altogether clear. I made mine as best I could from the plans using styrene strip.

There was a model of the vssel in the Midhurst show last year, photo below. The crane is a bit out of focus but may help.

The best photo I have seen of the ship which shows the crane is this one on sister ship Ionic Ferry:

Bardic Ferry's crane can also be seen in this photo:

This type of 20 ton crane was fitted on deck capable of slewing through 360 degrees at a radius of 40ft – giving an outreach of 12ft 6ins beyond ships side. As typical of this style of vessel from this era it was built with Ministry of Defence requirements in mind, including the ability to carry tanks on her vehicle deck.

I've got a copy of the specs somewhere.

Thanks chaps, Colin, that last picture is a big help. Paul, thanks for the info, I googled 20 ton deck crane after reading your post and got some decent images of how these things are put together. I'm not an exact scale builder so armed with these pictures I can enjoy myself making something fit for the job. I'm going to start from the image below, and work from there.
