      Hi,

New here, so please excuse any lapses in protocol that I might make.

I am resurrecting a mostly completed model of the MV Frank Rayner from Vic Smeed's drawings, but I am puzzled by the plan's colour chart, and I wonder if someone here has made any progress on this issue.

The basic question is that the plans say light grey hull, dark grey rubbing strakes, and black bulwarks; the brief article in Model Maker (July 1956) has the same. But… the article and the thumbnail image that accompanies the plans on myhobbystore show a photograph of the vessel with what looks very much like a black hull, or at the least dark grey, and bulwarks that are much lighter than the hull: red maybe, like the superstructure? Sadly, google images does not throw up a result for this boat.

Whilst on the subject, can anyone refer me to an image or sketch of a a suitable tow hook, because I cannot make sense of the plans for this item.

      Thanks, NickN

Boats do get painted in different colour schemes throughout their service life but if the article and plan states a specific livery then this is what would have been carried at the time depicted by the plan.

Frank Rayner was a British Waterways boat so the National Waterways Museum may be able to help you with this and also the tow hook design.

Many thanks for the reply. I must be getting slow in my old age: of course a boat might be repainted many times, so the colour given on the plan will represent a snapshot in the vessel's life. Thanks, too, for the link — I will pursue as soon as…
