A friend of mine is after some plans for a DUKW WW2 amphibious vehicle. There are some available from My Hobby Store – RM68 on the X List. but the web-site fails to define any other information. Does anyone have any information on these drawings, scale, detail etc.?

David. Suprised to be honest that there is NO info on the X-list listing (having just had a surf).

One would like to think that there would at least be a scale on it !!

Ashley – I recall seeing somewhere a very basic amphibious vehicle (model) but it was certainly not a DUKW. It was more like an amphibious van. My friend has emailed My Hobby Store so I will let you know the outcome.

If you're talking about the model in the Dec 1970 Radio Modeller, that was a semi-scale amphibious vehicle at 19" long.

Although entitled 'DUKW', it does not look much like the GM 6-wheel DUKW that we usually call a DUKW. It is a pretty square box-shaped 4-wheel amphibian, and looks simple and freelance to me.

Ashley (and others) – My friend received a prompt response from My Hobby Store (MHS) Apparently for any drawing within the X List, MHS cannot provide any further information. You just have to take pot luck and have the drawing printed off by their supplier and hope for the best. So my recommendation is that unless you know exactly what you are purchasing i.e. scale, amount of detail etc……then steer well clear.

There is quite a lot of detailed information on the interweb about the DUKW including specifications and dimensions, is your friend able to do his own research and work up a basic set of drawings?

Thanks for the LINK. He has already sent a couple of emails to the States to try and get some scale drawings, but to date there has been no response. You will probably recall an article in MB about 4 years ago, where the model of a DUKW had been constructed, but the person concerned had produced his own drawings by building a plastic kit form which he obtained measurements.

David. A very good site for scale drawings is "The-blueprints.com".

Loads of DUKWs there.

What is the end goal of these plans??? A static large scale model? floating /prop driven only or full wheel driven/articulate and prop affair?

Its a bit of a gamble, but if the x-list plan is for a floating prop driven model then this would be an adequate base for construction, using other reference material to detail the model. I cant see there is any right or wrong way to detail a DUKW…it was a truck and surely no two can have been the same after a while. There were differences in basic construction concerning the skinning and amount of wheel cover (I think) but again other reference material can be used to build the version you want, modifying the basic X-plan.

If it is wheel driven then its a whole different ball game and the generic you would be on your own with regards to the mechanics.

There are other considerations to making a floating wheeled vehicle, and that is a source of suitable wheels. Most important especially if powering them is the aim. In fact, the first thing i would look for is wheels.

The Alvis had been on my list for years, but only came to fruition after I saw some wheels.

It would be easy for someone to take the entire list and create thumbnails for each file – there are free utilities which do this in bulk. Thumbnails could then be sent to anyone who asks about a plan, or put in the space on the web page where an image of the completed model would go if they had one. MyHobbyStore already does this for a (very) few plans.

I estimate that it would take no more than an hour's work to run a thumbnail utility against the plan files and replace the 'X-List Plans' logo with the thumbnail copy. A lot less if you wrote a macro to do it.

The fact that MyHobbyStore does not even bother to do this suggests to me that they are completely uninterested in selling these items. Which makes me wonder why they still bother to retain copyright and prevent any distribution of them…

I think that the point to make is that they have practically no interest in selling them, but they don't want anyone else to have them….
