hi all i have a friend of mine who wants to build a pt boat from the plans that were in the oct 1999 issue of model boats .Easy enough you say BUT he wants to crew it with 6" figures and wants to know how big he would have to enlarge the plans by to get the size needed , by what percentage so he can take it to the copy shop and ask them to enlarge it by that size and also what size motors should he use as he wants to make it a twin prop as he thinks that a single prop would not look right .So c'mon folks get your thinking caps on .

Hi Andy

Is this Glynns ELCO boat?

If so the full size boat is 80ft so a very rough guide to suit 6in figures would be 1in to the foot.

The model would be 80inches long (about 6ft 6) I cant remember what scale Glynn used but its not difficult to work out the enlargement.

As for engines……a pair of MAN diesels would do nicely……but failing this I would be looking at a triple set of Leopard brushless (DM is the man to ask but I would advise sitting down when looking at prices)

The GG Vosper MTB comes out at around 24" so 1:35 for 6" figures to fit it would have to be three times the size ie 6" long.

As Paul says, for 6 inch men to be in scale, the model would have to be 1:12 scale and 80 inches long. There is a fantastic 1:16 model of PT 588, an ELCO PT boat described here **LINK**

It takes a while for the file to download but its well worth a look. It was part of the inspiration for me when I built a 1:24 scale model of PT 602

That would be some boat at 80 inches, and think of the width. Thats a huge volume. Would cost something to get it motoring at a realistic speed.

I hate to say it but a boat that size would really need a weed-eater engine a la AmyJ.

Figures that size might also be an issue (All i can find are slightly smaller chaps) In fact finding suitable figures may be the first thing to do.

Nice boat! But I don't know where he got hold of that history – it seems to have changed since 1945…..!
