Waiting for plans for Vic Smeeds – "Scudder".

Has any body built or seen any pic's of the above?

          John,

Found this in an old plans handbook which is not the best by modern standards, but good luck with the search. Original item was one of (the four) of Vic's airscrew designs which were featured in Model Maker magazine Dec 1953 & Jan 1954.

It would be interesting to see photographs of your build.

Studding plans and deciding if this could be built in plastic sheet or a bit of both. Twin pontoons could be easily be made in plastic with hull balsa construction.
            Any comments would welcome.
Balsa & ply on order + I have plastic sheeting If I decide to go that way.

            109_1072.jpg
This project would obviously lend itself to using a Brushless Motor, which is new to me so any advice on size etc. again will be welcome.
Also note this is my first Hydroplane, but I like unusual project and this very early design caught my eye having never seen anything like this before.

Picture of build will be forth coming in the near future..

Hi John The plans say up to 3.5cc ic, thats 0.2 cu in or a 20 size motor in todays parlance. Looking on a model aircraft site **LINK** they say 0.2 i/c is about 300watt electric equivalent.

So up to 300w motor is a starting place. Also remember the original was not designed to carry "heavy" batteries

              Hope this helps cheers Tom

John. Comments; looks good. What a lovely vintage build! A dark matt blue I fancy would look particularly vintage.

Brushless motors !!! yer on yer own there.

A call to a model aircraft shop may be warranted.

I see the large lumps or balsa at the back. I am think more like a bulkhead to secure the rear moto mount of a brushless and Blue styrofoam outer for the shape? Styrofoam is easy to shape and very light. An outrunner brushless motor needs a rear (of engine) mount.. It may be an idea to purchase your chosen motor before continuing the build around the motor area….

If I was building this, a test would be warranted before any more sculpting took place.. Finish the hull and then get it running properly before finishing the top part.

John. looks good and I think that this would be great in ana nice vintage matt blue colour.

The large lump of balsa at the rear is probably unwarranted nowadays see my earlier post.

Tom. That link is exactly the sort of thing a newbie needs, a package all matched up.

I wonder what the original colours where when Vic Smeed first build his?

I have deviated from the plans a bit as Vic has is rudder / mounting complexly covered and would not be accessible when complete. I have made the two front covers one big cover & a smaller cover for rudder access. This means making the back tail fin will be in two parts. The big blocks have as yet to be ''sculptured'' to shape, this will completed when brushless motor arrives.

                            Will post more pic's soon.

John. I thing a nice vintage matt dark blue would look nice.

It may be that an outrunner motor will fix to the rear the same as the original glo (or whatever) engine with any luck oh? Mounted at the rear face.

Colours I was thinking main hull Blue (same colour as the legendary Blue Bird) with the pontoons white?

Can always change the pontoons to Blue to suit, if it looks odd.

The motor an outrunner (when it arrives) was intended to mount / fix to the rear face.

                                      Hi John,

I have just caught up with your build and I must say I'm enjoying your photos very much -and what a fantastic (literally!) boat.

It's strange that when you see these old boats in the Plans Handbooks they don't look like much but in the flesh they really come to life. Perhaps we ought to persuade MHS to upgrade with new photos as new versions of these boats are being built. I know Tony is building a Guardsman and my Vic Smeed Veleta is now making good progress- and with your Scudder, there are some old Vic Smeed designs coming through.

We all await trials with baited breath-especially those of us with weedy sailing waters!

I would love the plan of this usual boat and also it is a Vic Smeed design.

I have a FPV system which is looking for a rescue/push boat to go in!!

                                                  Hi Harry,

Well you've got me with a FPV system whatever that is but I'm in the process of finding someone to copy my plan. I intend to do a rebuild.

Yes it is a Vic Smeed design says so on it, originally 3/6. if you wish to use a more powerful motor, which I suggest you should, you will need 'To Higher' the rear nacelle by whatever length your pusher prop will be because it sits right on the tail of the boat. I fitted my motor a 5cc vertically easier to start plus I could have even inverted it if I so chose

My email address is:- [email protected]

Send me your address and I will gladly send you a copy. it will take even the old receivers of yesteryear it has quite an accommodating interior. I used Smartie tube tops for the portholes and then glazed them on the inside.

The problem I have is trying to find a way to steer her because it uses a below hull rudder. Without that you could even have her running around a large puddle in your garden (Paddock in my case)

                                                  Regards
