Neptune 36 was a featured free plan in June 1989. I bought the hull and startedto build, but it went ( with all modelling!) to the back of the workshop. I am now completing the model, but note that there is a difference in prop sizes quoted between the plan and the text. The plan says 1.5" and the text 2" – 4 bladed handed pair. I am using 380 size motors. Has anyone built this model, and if so, what sie props were used?

Also has anyone got the August 1989 issue of MB for the final part of the dialogue – a scanned copy of the article would help.

2" -4 blade is definitely much too big for an ungeared 380, which is a very fast little motor. I wouldn't put anything more than a 25mm prop on it, and that would be 3-bladed. A 385, which is much slower and has more torque, could handle a 30mm 3-blade prop but would be struggling with 4 blades.
I'm not familar with the model at all. Maybe you could tell us the O/A length, beam and type of model (e.g. fast luxury cruiser, Broads pleasure cruiser etc) then we could make a better stab it it.

The Neptune 36 is described as a 'modern luxury trawler yacht' and the article was by David Metcalf. Being 1989. All dimensions were in imperial – scale =3/4" to 1'; LOA 28 3/4" (33 1/2" if the stern davits and inflatable dinghy are included. Beam is 10 1/2"; displacement about 16 1/2 lb. I bought the polystyrene vac form hull and it is this that I am rebuilding. Fortunately the plastic was protected from the effects of UV and has not deteriorated!. I am not sure if the plans/hull are still available through the plans service.

Both the plans and the hull of this very attractive vessel are still listed by MyHobbyStore.

I'd suggest either a Mabuchi 555 motor (from Component Shop) or one of these from MFA **LINK**
Either will turn a 1.5" 4-bladed prop at about the right speed on anything from 7.2v to 12v.. They should also have little problem with the larger one but I always start small with prop selection.
If you're already committed to 380-size then try one of these on 7.2v and with a 30mm 4-blade or 35mm 3-blade prop. **LINK**
                Hope this helps.

Gems, all these motors and possibly very under rated, I would use a 385 (and I do) for 40mm props, they seem to handle this ok…it may be overloading it a bit, but the current consumption is miserable, and even overloaded it is still miserable. They dont get hot on 12v and 40mm props. And cheap!

I have just bought the plans for the Neptune off ebay here in Canada and would like to buy a hull pack for this. What does the hull pack consist of and has anyone got any photos of one please.

                    Thanks so much.
