A bit of a dead end vessel if you ask me, but a great boat to make a model of. Unusual.

hi fat controller looking for 1/35 i think but could go bigger. Just thinking of the motors in the pontoons it might take some thought. Looked at using a speed controler for rc tanks so then i wouldn,t have to bother with rudder then.

Do you know if there are any rc plans that i can get hold of????

Will. postage MAY be a bit expensive, possibly you would have to collect..

For the drive, flexible shafts (as used in Hydro`s) could be installed perhaps, keeping the motors inside the main body. Action Electronics do a proportional box thingy for differential steering, using two ESc`s. I would say the propulsion of such a model would not be the issue, more likely getting the correct bouyancy right would be the issue, and then the stability once on the move.

A prototype would be easy though, just using a weighted box of approx hull dimensions and a couple of arms attatched to which you could temp fix various size tubes for the sponsons, until you get a good balance between scale and operational neccesity!.

the bouyancey could be the sticking point. As it might sit on top of the water rather than in it. Going to need some more thought.

I was going to build it out of balsawood but going to do foam 1st as i have lots of the stuff.

Foam might to to light for a ship of this design.

As most the vessel is out of the water it will suffer from excessive wind sheer especially given the amount of superstructure surface area. I would suggest a more solid material such as ply for extra strength and rigidity and then load up the sponsons with batteries etc for ballast.

perhaps some small keels on the sponsons would help things.

The sponsons could be partially water ballasted.

Dont know what size the sponson tubes are but you can get ABS tube and hemispheres from EMA model supplies in Shepperton,.Very stiff stuff and easily glueable. They do cones as well.

I would keep all the stuff in the main fuselage, simpler that way.

Perhaps Paul can suggest a suitable mechanism for launching the missiles out the VL silo,

I beg to differ with one of your suggestions.

Water ballast would not make much difference as it has the same weight as the surrounding fluid i.e. the boat will be lower in the water but still not enough low down weight to prevent the effects of wind sheer.

Added keels will help prevent the model being pushed sideways and provide the needed weight to lower the centre of gravity.

Launching could be done with compressed air or springs (not gunpowder)

Paul, I take your issue with the water ballast. What about the flexishaft idea though?? good I thought.

I bought some tiny firework rockets years ago, and toyed with the idea of having them being fired from the front exocet boxes on my leander frigate. i still have the rockets …

Whilst having the equipment in the main body is the most accessible location the downside in this particular model is the active centre of gravity which would be very high in relation to the floating ideal and would result in stability problems.

The better location for any decent weight would be in the sponsons.

Fireworks….nice idea but the health and safety police might get a little upset.(mind you I would still have a go)
