Have just built a "Nexus Tide" Oil Rig Supply Vessel from MB free plans enlarged to 36" length and 8" beam giving approx 1:50 scale.

On its maiden voyage at scale(ish) speed it looks fine with pleasing bow wave and wake, however it can go faster and stay stable.

The problem is when I brought it in to check for leaks etc. the motor was smoking a little. Its using a 540 motor, 7.2v stick pack and a 45mm 3 blade prop.

Any ideas on how best to tame the motor eg. water cooling / add gearing / add a fan / change the prop ?

      Any advice would be welcome.

      Thanks

My first thought would be that the prop is too big or has too much pitch and is overloading the motor. Try a smaller prop first, say 35mm.

If the motor was smoking then it may have been damaged – do you know the motor specifications? 540 can be a lot of things depending on the number of windings.

Trevor, A 45mm prop is way too big for a 540 of almost any description . As suggested a 35mm would be ok Or gear it down a bit to use a bigger prop.

My HMS Jersey OPV (which I dont think you have seen down at the pond yet) of about the same dimensions ran quite well on a cooking 540 on 6v and 35mm prop. Currently it has a 555 motor and 35mm prop on 12v which is about the same.

Looks like I will have to get down the model shop for a few props before Sunday !

Ashley – you missed the three new boats last Sunday even though I was there on my own !

Nice and dry above the waterline when me and my daughter arrived !

Tried a 40mm prop (previous one has 55 marked on it – whoops) !

Ran a lot cooler – however inclement weather meant all the boats were going sideways yesterday and testing was cut short.

May try thr 35mm prop next time.

                    Thanks for the advice.
