Has anyone out there build the SRN6 Hovercraft from the Julian Annells
plans MAR 2437? I am planning to have a go and, if there is a build log
anywhere that would be a great help. I have some photos of Mark
      Porter’s build
plus the full size plans (1/16th scale). The first stage is to identify
the individual parts to be fabricated which, for someone unused to
building from plans, is no easy matter! Sad. Any help, advice. encouragement etc would be gratefully
      received.

            Thanks!

I posted the same message on Mayhem – no response as yet. A search for ‘hovercraft’ yielded only one thread with the most recent entry on late 2007. On RCGroups, I got a response from a member of the Model Hovercraft Association which I will join. Other members have built the SRN6 and, with luck, I may come across a build log. Hovercraft appear to be a minority interest. I think the build will present quite a challenge.

Jeremy, How about, thinking oustide the box, like wot i do, make a body out of solid wood and take it to a plastics firm and get a shell vac-formed.

Light, strong and flat (ie not bowing, I should think a problem when trying to build something very light and relatively flat.)

Easy to glue bits to (as it would be styrene sheet)..Fairly cheap.. materials to build the plug, dead cheap, vacforming…shouldnt be too much.. have two moulded just in case.

With a bit of thought, you could arrange to have a recessed tray for the battery and gear “moulded in”, and perhaps have the top bit (lid) on the side so you get that in styrene as well.

OR… make the plug out of expanded polystyrene, and so the vacformed sheet can be very thin, as you leave the expanded poly in place and this would support the structure of the shell…. just carve out the bits you dont want underneath.. self contained floatation guaranteed… go large, have a big one!!

              Food for thought, eh ??

Food for thought indeed! However, I like making things out of wood and I’m in no rush. If I can interpret the plans well enough to fabricate the parts needed, I don’t thing putting it together should present too much of a challenge.

As for lightness, the original was based around using standard 540 motors. The extra power and lower weight of brushless should allow me to build a reasonably strong structure. Where balsa has been used, I will be able to use birch ply.

One way or another, I hope to find someone who has built from the plans and kept a photo log of the build as it progressed. When I do go ahead, I will start a build log so others can learn from the many mistakes I will certainly make.

I have also looked at the RCGroups web site. They have a forum on Hovercraft which may be useful.

                  Jeremy,

a chap at last years “Birchwood” convention, which took place at Haydock was into hovercraft and I think he had built one, and in wood. I know his latest project is one of the RNLI hovercraft as used at Morecambe, Lancashire, and that was in wood (Ply and balsa) and nearing the stage for painting.

I know which hall he was in so could possibly limit it to a few clubs. I know he was in the same room as Mastman, and the Lifeboat enthusiasts and the “bring and buy area”. If anyone else can help?

I’ll look see if I kept any plans – I’ll be back.

Thanks ! I will be interested to hear if you track your chap down. All experience will be worth learning from.

I have the full size plan of an SRN6 build in wood. I will actually build the shorter SRN5 which is the same model less four side frames. My problem is identifying some of the parts from the plan which is where photos of a build in progress (SRN6 or 5) would be very helpfull. Looking more closely at Mark Porter’s website yesterday,
I found full size templates of the bow and side frames and, even more useful, templates for the skirt sections with instructions how to assemble them. These were not included on the published plan and are a real step forward.

I assume you are familiare with the two craft at the Hovercraft Museum?

I have now joined the Model Hovercraft Association and was linked to a member who built the SR.N6 from the same plans as I am usingsmiley. Now it's full steam ahead or whatever the hovering equivalent is. I will post photos of the build in the albums section of this website as I go along.

                            Hi all,

I realize this post is inactive for a long time buy I recently got my hands on these plans to build the Sr n6 hovercraft and I could use some help interpreting the plans.

Anyone can give me some pointers?

                            thanks in advance

                              Hi Jose

I built this model some years ago and you may find my build log of some use in interpreting the plans. Please message me is you need any further information. Good luck with it!
